DLR Group acquires two Bay Area specialty firms

The San Francisco office of DLR Group has announced its acquisition of two smaller local specialty design practices in a move that will expand services to clients in the areas of civic and public safety design as well as high-end hospitality and residential interiors.

Thirty-five-year-old BraytonHughes Design Studios and Sonoma-based RossDrulisCusenbery (RDC) were the two firms acquired in separate deals. Both are well-known in the Bay Area market, having developed nationally recognized designs in their respective practice areas for the last three decades.

The boutique interiors specialist BraytonHughes Design Studios will add their expertise in high-end hospitality, resort, corporate office design, and residential projects to the DLR portfolio. Its addition helps DLR to accelerate growth in these segments and is strengthened by the firm’s longtime clients like the Four Seasons, Waldorf Astoria, and Grand Hyatt hotel brands, according to DLR.

DLR Group and Hines collaborate on Chicago's first mass timber office building

DLR Group and real estate developer Hines have announced that they are planning to deliver their T3 (Timber, Transit, and Technology) office concept to Chicago.

It will be the city’s first mass timber office building and, as noted in its press release, one of the first timber buildings since the Great Chicago Fire. The site is located along the Chicago River in the city’s North Branch Framework corridor. According to DLR Group, it will support the redevelopment of Chicago’s Goose Island, a 160-acre artificial island in the city’s northwest side.

The structure will span six stories and 270,000 square feet, including spaces for work/life balance through common lounges, bike storage, a fitness center, and ground-floor retail. The building will also include private balconies and a communal rooftop deck.

DLR Group's Dream Hotel in Las Vegas begins construction

A new 21-story luxury hotel tower by DLR Group has officially broken ground in Las Vegas. The Dream Las Vegas Hotel & Casino will sit along the Las Vegas Strip adjacent to the iconic “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign. The project is expected to be hotel brand and management company Dream Hotel Group’s new flagship property.

The hotel will feature 531 guest rooms and suites. A tower sits atop three levels of gaming, dining, and nightlife venues. These stacked layers shift and undulate vertically to break down the large scale of the building and provide an elevated series of roof decks that offer panoramic views of the strip and desert landscape. Guests access the space via a two-story lobby that leads to this selection of venues.

Construction has officially commenced on the new DLR Group-designed Compton High School in California. Designers, dignitaries, school district leaders, staff, students, and community members came together on May 7th to celebrate the groundbreaking.

The 126-year-old school has a rich history, well known for producing music and athletic prodigies. DLR Group’s design celebrates this legacy through a new campus with a dynamic learning environment that aims to elevate education for both students and educators. The design solution is centered around learning suites that foster project-based learning, student exploration, general instruction, and relationship building. In addition, the learning suites will allow for interdepartmental collaboration. They are designed as separate suites that can be linked together with moveable walls that open and close, allowing students and faculty to customize their spaces to support a variety of learning activities.

Portland Building is no longer historically significant

A new audit conducted by the city of Portland, Oregon presents an alarming view into the contentious renovations currently being undertaken for the Michael Graves-designed Portland Building.

Among a flurry of critiques aimed at the project organizers, the report states that changes performed to the building's outward material configuration have been so transformative as to effectively nullify the iconic postmodern tower's historical significance.

The report warns: "Despite the importance of historic preservation, there was no minimum requirement identified for this project principle. The project team [only] identified an aspirational goal and anticipated benefit to 'maintain the historic and iconic status of the building.'"
