This Chinese bookstore recalls ancient stepwells

Shangai-based architecture firm X+Living has just completed their most recent - and possibly most beguiling - bookstore in the city of Chongqing, China. Zhongshuge, a Chinese bookstore chain known for its bold interior design, commissioned X+Living to develop their newest shop with mesmerizing proportions, details and materiality.

The layout of the stairs in the main room recalls the stepwells of ancient India designed for water collection and access, while the full ceiling mirror effectively doubles the sensation of movement throughout the space when in use. The effect is also carried throughout the store's other, smaller spaces, which feature bright pink floors and whimsically-shaped bookshelves (below).
