Chicago Architecture Biennial announces extended dates and added partners for CAB 5

The Chicago Architecture Biennial (CAB) has just announced newly-extended dates and an additional slate of 50 contributors, bringing the total number of cultural participants to over 100 for the exhibition, which runs from September 21st to February 11th of next year.

Under the direction of the curatorial collective Floating Museum, CAB 5 will open in two phases: One, beginning next month, will hone in on select openings at sites across the city, which align with the previous Biennial’s decentralized ambition. The second, which is meant to encourage public participation, will see the activation of CAB’s other sites in coordination with exhibition programming hosted by the Graham Foundation and the Chicago Cultural Center.

Additional partners for CAB 5 include the DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center, Goethe-Institut Chicago, MAS Context, the Illinois Institute of Technology College of Architecture, and the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA). This year’s...

Graham Foundation announces $338,000 in grants to organizations furthering architecture and design ideas

The Graham Foundation has announced its annual list of organizational grants featuring a total of 36 recipients from around the world whose work furthers institutional goals to support the development and exchange of ideas about architecture and design.

This year's class included projects from a variety of organizations located in Buenos Aires, Colombo, London, New York, St. Louis, Toronto, Chicago, and elsewhere. Podcasts from the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation and the Society of Architectural Historians’ Race and Architectural History Affiliate Group were awarded alongside public presentations, exhibitions, and publications like Lucy Sante’s engrossing Nineteen Reservoirs and the forthcoming Cornelia Hahn Oberlander on Pedagogical Playgrounds from Concordia University Press.

Graham Foundation announces $507,500 in grants to individuals working to advance the global discourse on architecture

The annual round of Graham Foundation individual grants has been announced today in Chicago.

A total of $507,500 was given to 56 different projects, publications, exhibitions, films, and other intellectual endeavors from around the world that expand contemporary understandings of architecture, according to the Foundation.

This year’s projects offered a range of different voices utilizing a variety of new media. Catalina Mejía Moreno and Huda Tayob’s podcast “Architectures of the South: Bruising, Remembering, Repairing” was included along with publications like Lee Bey and Blair Kamin’s excellent new title Who Is the City For? Architecture, Equity, and the Public Realm in Chicago, and Marina Otero Verzier’s Evanescent Institutions: On the Politics of Temporary Architecture, among others.

Graham Foundation announces 2021 Organization Grant recipients

The Graham Foundation has announced the recipients of its 2021 grants to organizations. $471,500 was awarded to organizations around the world that are “producing projects that encourage new conversations and explorations across architecture and design,” as stated by the foundation.

45 projects, including exhibitions, publications, digital initiatives, and public presentations led by organizations based in cities such as Atlanta, London, Los Angeles, Mexico City, and Chicago were recognized. The diverse array of projects includes exhibitions by the likes of The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA), along with public programming from Harvard GSD’s African American Student Union. The Graham Foundation has announced the recipients of its 2021 Grants to Individuals, awarding $585,000 to people exploring innovative design ideas that expand our contemporary understanding of architecture. The 71 grants were awarded to individuals around the world, selected from nearly 700 proposals. The funded projects include research, exhibitions, publications, films, digital initiatives, and other formats that promote rigorous, critical discourse in architecture.

The recipients of the 2021 funds are based in cities such as Ahmedabad, Milan, Mexico City, Durban, South Africa, and San Juan. Topics of exploration include the living legacy of under-recognized Black architect Charles E. This year the Graham Foundation has announced 36 international organizations as recipients of this year's grants. According to the foundation, selected projects were chosen thanks to their ability to "respond to today's challenges, foster new connections across disciplines, and expand the field of architecture."

The annual Graham Foundation grant announcements provide individuals and organizations the opportunity to pursue and investigate an array of architectural topics. This year's grant recipients include editorial projects from publications and student-led journals like UCLA's Architecture and Urban Design student publication, POOL, and RICE University's student-led publication, PLAT, amongst others. Exhibitions, public programs, and media projects like the Architecture Lobby's JustDesign initiative, which Archinect has partnered on, were also selected as grant recipients.

The Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts has announced its slate of 2020 Grants to Individuals, a set of 52 awards totaling $320,800 in funding for research endeavors that highlight a multiplicity of architectural, urban, and social perspectives.

As in years passed, the 2020 cohort of grantees offers a spread of fascinating architectural topics currently being investigated by the selected architects, scholars, writers, artists, designers, curators, and filmmakers who are "working worldwide on urgent issues that further the contemporary understanding of the built environment," as the Graham Foundation tells it.

Twice a year, the Graham Foundation issues a series of significant grants, first to individuals and then to organizations. The Foundation has just released the list of recipients of the 2017 Grants to Individuals, totaling over $560,000 divided amongst 72 projects.

"Many of our grantees this year are exploring the agency of design," states Graham Foundation director Sarah Herda. "They are testing the limits of conventional practice to make new work that directly engages the social and political dimensions of the designed environment."

The recipients of the 2016 Graham Foundations grants announced

The Graham Foundation has announced the winners of their annual grants to organizations. In total, the grants amount to $419,000 and will support 31 projects, ranging from exhibitions to site-specific commissions and publications. The winning projects were selected out of a pool of 230 submissions.

"Operating on a variety of scales, these grants give voice to innovative programs and scholarship, and create new platforms for engagement with architecture and its role in the arts, culture, and society," the Graham Foundation states in the press release.

Robert Urquhart spoke with curators Jack Self, Shumi Bose and Finn Williams, previewing their British Pavilion for the 2016 Venice Biennale.

As they explained;

"We’re interested in the influence of bureaucratic apparatus like the Terms & Conditions of Airbnb, the semantics of a mortgage, or the lifespan of product warranties, on the design of the home. But rather than seeing these as constraints, we want to show these as fields where architecture can expand its agency."

Graham Foundation announces the 2016 grantee projects

It's award season at The Graham Foundation. Not long after revealing the Carter Manny doctorate student winners, the Foundation recently announced 59 projects that will receive the 2016 individual grants, totaling at $491,500. The grants fund an array of inventive projects that are based on original ideas within the realm of architecture, whether through film, site-specific exhibitions, performances, research, or publications. The competition is open to not just architects and designers, but also to visual artists, writers, filmmakers, curators and the like. Last year, the Foundation awarded $496,500 to 49 projects.

As usual, competition is fierce. 2016 reeled in 640 submissions representing 42 countries. A few familiar names from this year's winners include Tatiana Bilbao Estudio, Alexandra Lange, Beatriz Colomina, Point Supreme, and Allan Wexler — among other talented individuals and groups to keep an eye on in the field.

From Kiev to Los Angeles, from mind-bending artist Dan Graham to stately architect Kevin Roche, the Graham Foundation has announced the 49 international winners of its 2015 Grants to Organizations. Each year, the Foundation gives out two sets of grants: one for individuals including architects, writers, and artists, and one specifically for organizations, such as museums, universities, publishers, and trusts. The grant categories include film, exhibitions, public programs, and publications. This year, $496,500 was awarded to 49 winners from a competitive pool of 200 entries featuring both emerging and established organizations.

Graham Foundation Announces 2015 Individual Grants

Olafur Eliasson, Charles Rice and Iwan Baan are among the artists, scholars, photographers, and other architecturally-oriented professionals who are being awarded individual grants by the Graham Foundation this evening. The awards ceremony and reception, which is being live streamed as of 6 PM CDT, is being held in The Madlener House, the foundation's headquarters since 1963. This year, the foundation is awarding $490,000 in grants for 63 projects to individuals who "advance new scholarship in the field of architecture, fuel creative experimentation and critical dialogue, and expand opportunities for public engagement with architecture and its role in contemporary society." The list of presenters at the ceremony includes Noritaka Minami, Candace Taylor, Lluis Ortega, and Tiffany Lambert, all of whom are 2015 grant winners.

Architects tell all in a global survey about the future of design competitions

Architectural design competitions have long been a crucial element in the field -- from the student level to starchitect status -- that can provide an international platform for drawing attention to pressing issues and new ideas in the world around us. Nonetheless, the typical structure of the competition is also in great need of its very own discussion. The Architectural Record and the Van Alen Institute conducted a global Competition Survey that asked architects and designers worldwide about what drives them to participate in competitions, what they like and dislike about the process, and suggestions for how to improve and rethink its format for the future.

Respondents fervently shared their input and personal experiences in the survey, which amassed a total of 1,414 responses from 65 countries. The Architectural Record and Van Alen published the results in three documents:

The upcoming publication and exhibition "Treatise: Why Write Alone?" at the Graham Foundation in Chicago utilizes the architectural treatise as a platform for experimentation, theoretical inquiry, and debate through the collective works of 14 emerging designers.
