Holmenkollen ski jump turns into Airbnb penthouse for one night

One lucky soul will get to enjoy an unforgettable night in one of Oslo's most iconic destinations later this month: the topmost floor of the JDS-designed Holmenkollen ski jump will be turned into a cozy, fully furnished Airbnb penthouse for the winner of a recent online contest.

From the contest description:

Set at the top of the ski jump where champions prepare for flight, the apartment’s floor to ceiling windows give you one of the best views imaginable of Oslo, snow capped mountains and endless forest.

On the first floor, 250 steps below the apartment you will find the world’s first ski museum. Discover more than 4,000 years of ski history and learn about the adventures of polar explorers, including Roald Amundsen.

After a day in the snow, leave your gear and take the lift up to your apartment at the very top of the Holmenkollen ski jump.

Kalvebod Waves aspires to become Copenhagen’s new waterfront attraction

The harbor-front project "Kalvebod Waves" officially opened on Aug. 30 at the Kalvebod Pier [...] in Copenhagen. The design by Julien de Smedt Architects and KLAR with support from Sloth Møller and Niras Engineers won first prize in a competition from December 2008. Not far from the popular Islands Brygge Park in the city, Kalvebod Waves is the latest phase of a long-term plan that aims to revive a formerly desolate section of the pier into a welcoming hub for urban and water activities.

JDS to Design New Youth Center in Lille, France

JDS / Julien De Smedt Architects have just signed the contract to execute their first French project for the city of Lille. The project that houses a youth hostel, a kindergarten and offices is the result of an invited competition that JDS won in collaboration with EGIS, Agence Franck Boutté Consultants, and SL2EC.

The Holmenkollen Ski Jump Wins 2011 ECCS Structural Steel Design Award

JDS Architects’ Holmenkollen Ski Jump has been announced as the winner of the 2011 ECCS Structural Steel Design Award today at the ECCS Congress in Potsdam, Germany. The award recognizes outstanding design in steel construction emphasizing the many advantages of steel in construction, production, economy and architecture.

A short back story. Towards the end of the school year, Julien De Smedt came to UIC to lecture. I was fortunate enough to be able to interview him for a forthcoming Fresh Meat article. Through the conversation, talk of short films came up. This led on to another conversation and then to something else (i don't remember all the details I'll have to review the recording). Long story short, I was asked to come to Copenhagen to work on a small Project for JDS.

JDS/Julien De Smedt Architects has shared with us the proposal for a mixed-use development in Hangzhou, China which recently won the Belgian firm the First Prize in the invited competition. The design team also included engineering firm China CUC.
