The American Institute of Architects San Francisco (AIASF) and the Center for Architecture + Design are pleased to announce the 16th annual Architecture + the City festival September 1-30. One of the nation’s largest architectural festivals celebrating San Francisco’s unique built environment and design community, the festival features exclusive building tours, authors’ series, lectures, panel discussions, and an exhibition featuring Bay Area artists. This year’s festival theme, “We the City,” will explore how cultural diversity and connectivity inspire and inform the built environment through more than 30 program offerings including the highly acclaimed San Francisco Living: Home Tours on September 21 which will showcase five modern residences in different neighborhoods throughout the city.

Bjarke Ingels's giant mirrored Orb rises at Burning Man

Now a global phenomenon, the annual Burning Man festival's biggest allure is the site's complete transformation into a temporary city filled with installations and large-scale constructions that are burned at the end of the week-long event.

Grabbing media attention every year, one of 2018's most anticipated structures has been Bjarke Ingels' pet project—a massive reflective ball hovering above the playa. Together with fellow BIG partner Jakob Lange, the two set up an Indiegogo campaign back in July to raise the last leg of funding for the installation.

Asking $50,000 to help with materials and construction, the campaign is still live as the pair have yet to meet the total goal. Despite not reaching it, however, the Orb still managed to make it to Burning Man this year. For those of you in the Los Angeles area, you are already aware of the Arroyo Seco Weekend music festival, taking place in Pasadena this weekend. The festival is a new event hosted by the same people that run Coachella, Desert Trip, and other amazing art/music/culture events.

For this inaugural festival, Archinect has teamed up with Jimenez Lai/Bureau Spectacular. Hosted by Archinect's Paul Petrunia and Nicholas Korody, we will be running our 5th Next Up podcasting event inside of Bureau Spectacular's project "Field House."

Revisiting the urban plan of Burning Man

When a group of Burners describing themselves as the Black Rock City Ministry of Urban Planning announced a design competition last fall for a new urban plan for Burning Man, Phil Walker had never given the matter much thought. “I’m actually not a Burner. I’ve never done it,” says Walker, the senior associate vice president for CallisonRTKL, an architecture firm and design consultancy. “Maybe a bit of vicarious living for a middle-aged suburban dad is what appealed to me.”

"So Walker didn’t set about to change the orientation of Black Rock City [...] instead, he built out a “kit of parts” for simple streetscape interventions that he says can have a dramatic impact on urban flow and cultural space."

London-based manufacturer Sto has collaborated with architecture and design practice Sam Jacob Studio to create a oversized replica of an ordinary garden shed by 3D scanning its facade and reproducing it using a product called Verolith. The oversized shed is covered in Verolith panels, a chalky lightweight material made from volcanic stone, typically used for building facades due to its ability to be customised by a CNC machine.

“One Thing After Another explores how objects can be transmitted through forms of technology and how that transmission leaves its trace within architectural substance - both a recording of a thing and that thing simultaneously,” says Sam Jacob of Sam Jacob Studio.

The shed copy has been 3D scanned and blown up to a scale of 1.8 its original size and both the original and the replica are exhibited at the Sto Werkstaff gallery in Clerkenwell as part of Clerkenwell Design Week 2016. Latest University of Westminster Burning Man studio project needs a Kickstart

For the past several years, tutors Arthur Mamou-Mani and Toby Burgess' University of Westminster design studio DS10 has helped students develop installation designs for Burning Man, many of which have gone on to be realized on the festival's grounds. This year, the parametrically-inspired, purposefully all-caps-titled design "PURSUIT" by fifth-year student Joshua Potter is hoping to be among those projects that make it to Black Rock City, thanks in part to his Kickstarter.

Potter used an arrowhead as his conceptual starting point, gradually deriving the six principal tower-like timber members of the structure's geometry through a mathematical process known as Pursuit Curvature.

Described by Potter as "an interactive art installation that celebrates humanity's ongoing quest for Peace, Freedom and Joy - in Life, Love and Art" the project has about another $22K to raise by May 16th.

The ‘Oscars of architecture’: World Architecture Festival opens call for entries

The annual World Architecture Festival Awards, the ‘Oscars of architecture’, is now open for entries. The awards will be celebrated at the World Architecture Festival (WAF) in Singapore this November, following three days of intensive live presentations and judging.

Entries are now invited from architects and designers for the 2015 edition of what is the biggest architectural awards program in the world. The awards are expected to attract more than 750 entries, about half of which will be shortlisted, in 31 categories. Reduced early bird rate ends May 1 and the final closing date for entries is May 22. Shortlisting takes place in early June.

Shortlisted entrants will compete for category prizes on the first two days of the three-day Festival, which takes place in the Suntec Centre on November 4, 5 and 6. SALT festival celebrates arctic architecture in Sandhornøy, Norway

Taking place on the island of Sandhornøy in the Arctic Circle region of Norway, SALT will host its opening festivities this weekend, starting August 29 to September 1. Founded in 2010 by acclaimed curator Helga-Marie Nordby and cultural entrepreneur Erlend Mogård-Larsen, SALT celebrates the rarely traversed arctic landscape and promotes Norway's contributions to art and design history.

MOCA Announces New Performance Festival for Downtown LA

This month, audiences will be able to check out the first program to emerge from Vergne's nascent administration: Step and Repeat, a multidisciplinary festival of performing arts, takes place at the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA over four Saturday evenings, beginning Sept. 13 [...] Step and Repeat will feature a unique nightly lineup of poetry readings, noise/experimental music, performance art, stand-up comedy, live bands and deejays, all presented side by side.

The news that performance and other public programming will return to the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) is a sign for some that the new director, Philippe Vergne, is already returning the embattled museum to its former strength. Vergne replaced the former director Jeffrey Deitch, whose stewarding of the institution provoked controversy and ended in his resignation. Some contended that Deitch oriented the museum too much around pop culture and celebrity, with exhibits like "Rebel" featuring the work of James France and "Art in the Streets" about graffiti. When he announced a show about disco, prestigious artists like Ed Ruscha and Barbara Kruger resigned from the museum board.

MOCA has a long history of being an "artist's museum," due to the active and experimental role of artists in its programming. For example, the ongoing MOCAtv showcases the works of artists who have not necessarily fully broken into the mainstream, such as the recent episodes by the Jogging or Ed Fornieles...

Temporary pavilion by J. MAYER H. as centerpiece for Karlsruhe’s 2015 City Jubilee

It's party prep time for the City of Karlsruhe in Germany. Berlin-based architecture firm J. MAYER H. and Rubner Holzbau were recently commissioned by the city to design a temporary pavilion for its 300th anniversary in 2015. The wooden pavilion will be built in Schlosspark and serve as an event venue for the celebration. Construction will begin in March 2015.
