Construction update: Maltzan Architects concrete arches are coming together on the new Sixth Street Viaduct

Concrete arches along Los Angeles’s iconic Sixth Street Viaduct are rounding into shape as one of Michael Maltzan Architecture’s signature projects nears completion.

The $500 million project offers an update to the original span, which had to be demolished in 2016 owing to concerns related to its ability to withstand earthquakes due to the degradation of concrete in the original 1932 structure. (An arch from that structure was able to be preserved by the city later that year as over 1,000 components were given away in a promotion titled “Rock Day LA”.)

The soon-to-be-completed replacement recently went on display at this year’s Venice Biennale will feature added green space in addition to the pedestrian walkways and the 40-foot high arches, which are now about 50% completed based on photos recently published by the city and Urbanize LA.

Delivery of high-speed rail between Los Angeles and Anaheim could be sped up

Ridership on Metrolink would double between Burbank and Anaheim, relieving freeway congestion, and new high-speed electric trains would slash emissions along the route under a plan that would shift up to $5.5 billion from the bullet train project in the Central Valley to Southern California.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the California High-Speed Rail Authority could funnel a portion of the $20.5 billion already earmarked for the state's new train system toward a high-speed link connecting Southern California.

The funding would improve regional commuter rail services offered by Metrolink, which operates 528 miles of track across the area, by boosting train speeds up to 125 miles-per-hour along certain stretches of the route.

Deane Madsen shares his knowledge of LA's concrete architecture at Archinect Outpost

Recapping our second event of the year, Archinect Outpost was excited to host Deane Madsen and his work on the newly published Concrete Los Angeles Map. Despite the rainy weather on that Valentine's Day evening, enthusiasts of Los Angeles and brutalism flocked to join us for the special event. During the presentation, Deane provided guests with a brief explanation of the brutalist movement and soon went into the style's influence on Los Angeles architecture, while sipping complimentary cups of Archinect's own Brutal coffee.
