A new map offers a unique historical exploration of Berlin's eclectic subway architecture

Blue Crow Media’s latest update to a series of influential design maps uses 50 select sites along the U-Bahn, Berlin’s invisible lifeline, as a means of looking into the social and economic impacts of architecture in 20th-century Berlin.

Featuring photography from Nigel Green, architectural historian Verena Pfeiffer-Kloss’s two-sided, bilingual guide offers a lurid investigation into significant design elements of the network using examples from 1902 to 2009.

More than half of the current system was designed by Swedish architect Alfred Grenander before his death in 1931. His Art Noveau inspiration gave way to modernism in the years that followed.

Recapping our second event of the year, Archinect Outpost was excited to host Deane Madsen and his work on the newly published Concrete Los Angeles Map. Despite the rainy weather on that Valentine's Day evening, enthusiasts of Los Angeles and brutalism flocked to join us for the special event. During the presentation, Deane provided guests with a brief explanation of the brutalist movement and soon went into the style's influence on Los Angeles architecture, while sipping complimentary cups of Archinect's own Brutal coffee.

New map charts the radical and visionary Modernist architecture of Skopje

A new map featuring the modernist architecture of Skopje has been released by Blue Crow Media, the publishing company behind a popular series of Brutalist architecture maps. Their latest release, the Modernist Skopje Map, graphs the radical and visionary architecture of the Macedonian capital, detailing over forty buildings and structures.

The city plays host to an abundance of Communist-era Brutalist and Modernist architecture. Rocked by a devastating earthquake in 1963, Skopje was largely built up by the Japanese architect Kenzo Tange, who won an international competition to lead the urban reconstruction of the city center. With a particular focus on concrete brutalism, Tange and his team of international architects masterplanned the rebuilt capital, their retro-futuristic influences still apparent today.

Its vastness is doubly inconvenient for architecture buffs...The [Modern Berlin Map] documents 50 buildings, selected by Berlin-based journalist Matthew Tempest. Unfolded, the front of the guide displays the landmarks on a map of Berlin, while the reverse catalogues the buildings in chronological order. This provides a unique lens through which to track the city’s political shifts.
