Inaugural NOMA Foundation Fellowship cohort selected for employment and mentorship opportunities

The National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA) has announced the inaugural 30-student cohort of the NOMA Foundation Fellowship (NFF), an initiative that seeks to increase diversity within professional practice as well as provide firm mentorship and design research experience for young emerging professionals.

With the recent events of COVID-19 and a growing civil rights movement sweeping the nation, the importance of actionable measures that increase representation within firms and foster better opportunities for Black and minority students is paramount. With these initiatives in place, NOMA has announced the placement of 30 students to engage in a two-month virtual summer research fellowship.

The University of Cambridge Department of Architecture (ArcSoc) is proud to host their annual exhibition at the Bargehouse (SE1 9PH) from the 14th-17th July (Press preview, 6pm, Thursday 14th July). The Summer Show is the culmination of a year’s design work in the studios and is entirely student curated, designed and run. From the initial explorations of first years to the final schemes of their graduates, the ethos of their work is grounded in context and collaboration across the school.

The exhibition will run until the 17th July, including lectures from alumni and on the 16th July, prospective students will be invited to attend talks by current students and studio tutors. Alongside the drawings and models, there will be pavilions and extracurricular artwork to showcase our students’ many talents.

Graduate students from the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture’s Graduate Design and Build Studio program will officially begin work for the Port Authority of Houston Wednesday. The project aims to build an open shade structure for a security checkpoint where officers would check I.D.s. under the protection of a canopy.

Is working for the Port Authority as a grad student like interning for the government, especially when "The $75,000 [grad-student designed] project is more cost effective than the previous designs that would’ve cost between $200,000 to $400,000"?

Guggenheim to host "Competing Intelligence" Digital Architecture Masterclass this Saturday

Mark your calendars, The Guggenheim is hosting a free one-day "Competing Intelligence" Digital Architecture Masterclass this Saturday, March 7 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. All current architecture students and recent graduates (from within the past five years) in the New York metro area are encouraged to join!

This experiment will bring together human and artificial intelligence in evaluating design, as an interactive way to test the limits of artificial intelligence in an architectural context, specifically in the architecture competition. To make things even more interesting, the Stage One entries of the popular Guggenheim Helsinki Design Competition will be used as the data set.

The one-day workshop will be led by Hugo Liu, principal scientist at eBay and a Ph.D. holder from the MIT Media Lab, and Troy Conrad Therrien, who is the curator of the Architecture and Digital Initiatives.

Architects Support Students' Call for Pro Bono Work in Exchange for Loan Relief

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) today called for Congress to pass legislation that includes architecture school graduates in the same programs that offer other graduates loan debt assistance if they donate their services to their communities and elsewhere.

The AIA/AIAS initiative comes as both President Obama this past weekend and likely Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney today urged Congress to head off a scheduled increase in student loan interest rates this July.

Also today, the AIAS released a survey of almost 600 architect school graduates showing that graduating architecture students carry a much higher amount of undergraduate student debt - $40,000 on average – than the national student loan debt average of $25,000. AIAS members will visit Capitol Hill in July to lobby lawmakers on these issues.

“There are numerous opportunities for young talented architects to use their skills to help rebuild our nation’s communities,” said AIA President Jeff Potter, FAIA. “Yet, more and more young architects are leaving the profession because they cannot afford to remain; this brain-drain will have major implications for our communities and the construction industry in the years ahead.”
