We have a very special July 4th episode for you today.

Today’s show offers an especially American conversation with the Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Paul Goldberger. The discussion between myself and Goldberger was recorded live at Archinect Outpost last month for the launch of his latest book Ballpark.

Ballpark takes a deep dive into the history of the ballpark, and the impact it’s had on the evolution of the American city. The book looks at a selection of case studies to arrive at a simple yet compelling thesis: “In the ballpark,” Goldberger writes, “the two sides of the American character - the Jeffersonian impulse toward open space and rural expanse, and the Hamiltonian belief in the city and in industrial infrastructure - are joined, and cannot be torn apart.”

Join us in celebrating the launch of Single-Handedly: Contemporary Architects Draw by Hand, the latest book by Nalina Moses published by the Princeton Architectural Press. The event will be held at the A+D Museum, with copies of the book sold at Archinect Outpost, on Saturday, June 29th, from 6-7pm. Our address is 900 East 4th Street, Los Angeles CA 90029.

Alex Maclean is one such photographer, who has, for the last 30 years, made it his task to capture the evolution of the American landscape and the complex relationship between its natural and constructed environments that contribute to climate change.

Olafur Eliasson produces architecture with artistry

Few artists have dedicated their work to architectural space quite as much as Olafur Eliasson. His objects transform walls by their luminescence; his projections cast structure on structure; his geometry bends over backyards to multiply the qualities of sites. It is without doubt that one can place him on a list along with spatial artists including Dan Graham, Gordon Matta Clark and Kurt Schwitters.

Perhaps the fact that Eliasson's contributions to architectural affect have been historically undermined led to Thames & Hudson's publication of Unspoken Spaces, a monograph of the artist's most architectural work. It begins with an introduction by Eliasson that highlights his innate inability to separate art from architecture: "The artwork in this book are mostly models for space, defined by movement. They are world-makers."

Hélène Binet photographs Zaha Hadid's Pierres Vives

Pierres Vives, one of the last projects overseen by Zaha Hadid, reflects an innovative approach to spatial design and urban planning for the town of Montpellier, France. The 28,500-square-meter stone and concrete public building was conceived as a "tree of knowledge" by the architect as early as 2002. Pierres Vives combines three government functions—archives, a library, and a sports center—to suit the needs of the growing town.

The landmark project was photographed by famed architectural photographer Hélène Binet shortly after its completion and compiled in an eponymous book, Pierres Vives, published by Rizzoli and Skira.

10 copies of the newest issue of cult favorite magazine Real Review have recently arrived at Archinect Outpost. With a focus that straddles the line between design and politics and a memorable tagline ('What it means to live today'), Real Review has quickly developed a following.

Of particular interest with the newest issue is its surprising list of contributors. The issue starts off with an interview conducted between Real Review editor-in-chief Jack Self and Chelsea Manning, the former United States Army soldier who famously disclosed nearly 750,000 military and diplomatic documents to WikiLeaks. Given that the theme of issue 8 is 'Against from Within,' Self asks Manning about her exposure of military secrets while under its employment. "We are increasingly seeing risky and aggressive confrontational approaches to activism," she responded.

Pare traveled the world, from Le Corbusier's only built work in America to his only built work in Tokyo and everywhere in between, to document the architect's oeuvre in a way never before seen. The Architecture and Design Film Festival returns to Los Angeles as it hosts a five-day event featuring 24 films devoted to architecture and design. From March 13-17 guests will be able to attend film screenings, witness engaging panel discussions, and listen to director Q&A's. With the Los Angeles Theatre Center as the festival's backdrop, the event's chosen location adds to the excitement for architecture and design enthusiasts.

When we were considering what to carry at Archinect Outpost, our retail shop and event space in Downtown Los Angeles, the products designed by Sam Jacob Studio immediately sprang to mind. Though they were, without question, designed with architects with mind, they were designed to appeal to style-conscious consumers in general.

One product in particular that borders the architecture/non-architecture line is the Half-Timbered T-Shirt. While its patterning and name indicate that its influence is the half timbered architecture common in Jacob's native England. Popularized between 1450 and 1650, half-timber façades were originally designed to strengthen the structural skeleton of 2-3 story buildings most notably in England (though the method did find its way to parts of China and Japan).

Recapping our second event of the year, Archinect Outpost was excited to host Deane Madsen and his work on the newly published Concrete Los Angeles Map. Despite the rainy weather on that Valentine's Day evening, enthusiasts of Los Angeles and brutalism flocked to join us for the special event. During the presentation, Deane provided guests with a brief explanation of the brutalist movement and soon went into the style's influence on Los Angeles architecture, while sipping complimentary cups of Archinect's own Brutal coffee.

Authored and published by Zupagrafika, and now featured in our Downtown LA retail store and online at Archinect Outpost, these miniature versions of brutalist structures from former Eastern Bloc countries can now rest easily on your desk or bookshelf.

The Brutal East cutouts are authored and published by Zupagrafika, an independent design studio established in 2012 by a Hispano-Polish duo David Navarro and Martyna Sobecka in Poznań, Poland. The studio has a special affinity with Polish Poster School, post-war modernist architecture and paper.

Representing structures from Belgrade, Chisinau, Kaliningrad, Prague, St. Petersburg, Vilnius and Wrocław, these cutouts are faithfully illustrated with the ravages of time and hints of graffiti. The Brutal East kit comes with seven cutouts, each of which requires a ruler, and box cutter and white glue to construct.

Join us in celebrating The Blindspot Initiative, the latest book of projects and essays on design resistance and alternative modes of practice edited by Jose Sanchez at Archinect Outpost on Saturday, February 9th, 7-9pm. The evening will begin with a talk by Jose Sanchez and comments by contributors to the book (including Behnaz Farahi, Biayna Bogosian of Somewhere Something and Casey Rehm of Kinch), followed by a Virtual Reality demonstration and book signing.

An immersive 35,000 square foot art park opens in Los Angeles' Arts District

The Arts District in downtown Los Angeles is filled with several must-see locations. Now home to one of the world's first fully immersive entertainment art park, Wisdome LA allows for visitors to enter into unforgettable audio and visual experience. The park features five fully immersive domes that are outfitted for 360-degree visual and audio entertainment. Each dome is fitted with 10.1 surround sound to enhance the shared VR experience that showcases the future of art, entertainment, and technology.

The park can hold up to 1,000 people inside and around the domes. Through the use of 360-degree projection mapping technology, the domes display beautifully mesmerizing images.
