Today’s show offers an especially American conversation with the Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Paul Goldberger. The discussion between myself and Goldberger was recorded live at Archinect Outpost last month for the launch of his latest book Ballpark.

Ballpark takes a deep dive into the history of the ballpark, and the impact it’s had on the evolution of the American city. The book looks at a selection of case studies to arrive at a simple yet compelling thesis: “In the ballpark,” Goldberger writes, “the two sides of the American character - the Jeffersonian impulse toward open space and rural expanse, and the Hamiltonian belief in the city and in industrial infrastructure - are joined, and cannot be torn apart.”

His objects transform walls by their luminescence; his projections cast structure on structure; his geometry bends over backyards to multiply the qualities of sites. It is without doubt that one can place him on a list along with spatial artists including Dan Graham, Gordon Matta Clark and Kurt Schwitters.

They are world-makers."

The 28,500-square-meter stone and concrete public building was conceived as a "tree of knowledge" by the architect as early as 2002. Pierres Vives combines three government functions—archives, a library, and a sports center—to suit the needs of the growing town.

Architectural Design 40 April 1970, 178

Widely known for his award-winning design work, the Los Angeles-based architect Craig Hodgetts has distinguished himself as one of the key voices of his generation through trenchant commentary and visionary speculation on architecture and design. This volume gathers an array of theoretical polemics on buildings and cities, critical assessments of major projects and personalities, and other writings that showcase Hodgetts' unique position as both a central figure in the discipline of architecture and a tireless advocate of technological opportunities developed at the fringes of the field.

We're now carrying YIELD's new Architect Series incense — a delicious way to spruce up the atmosphere of your work or living space! You can purchase them from us online or visit our retail store in the LA Arts District to smell-before-buying.

Locally handcrafted by Florida-based designer and manufacturer YIELD, this series was inspired by some of the YIELD team's favorite 20th-century architects. The collection features three scents that distill distinct elements of nature and place: Entenza, Wright, and Scarpa.
