Make unveils a new building for HMRC woven into the history of Salford

Salford’s cotton-weaving history is behind Make Architecture's design for a brick commercial space Three New Bailey that will serve as a gateway to the city’s £1 billion master plan currently under development by the English Cities Fund.

Envisioned as a new regional hub for HMRC, the 7-story building will greet visitors and residents exiting the adjacent Salford Central train station into the newly formed piazza created on the 50-acre former brownfield site developed by the city council in collaboration with Legal & General and Homes England.

Per the architect: “The building’s simple and honest form was created in direct response to the HMRC brief and provides large, efficient, repeating floor spans with a side core to maximise flexibility in achieving their workplace needs for today and the future.”

Make Architects transforms former chocolate factory into boutique office building in Sydney

Make Architects has converted a former chocolate factory in Sydney, Australia into a boutique office building. Situated in the city’s Haymarket district, the building was originally built in the early 1900s. The project is the latest in a series of new developments in the area with dining, commercial, and retail uses moving in.

Preserving the structure’s original character was the core focus of the project. The design has retained as much of the pre-existing components of the 3-story building as possible, including the steel beams, timber flooring, exposed brickwork, and original hoists. New materials such as copper, concrete, and terrazzo, all sourced from within Australia, were chosen to contrast with the old.

Make Architects discusses the importance of the drawing

At their best, not only do architectural drawings convey architectural intention, but also something about the meaning of the project and the thinking behind it [...] Not all drawings can be judged in the same way, of course.

Reflecting on the upcoming drawing competition, The Architecture Drawing Prize, Paul Finch of Make Architects shares his thoughts on the importance of the architectural drawing.

Finch writes, "How does one assess the merits of a variety of drawing types? They are related but separate, some an attempt to indicate a whole outcome, while the working drawing explains the process by which individual elements combine at a detailed level. These elements can be combined in certain specialist drawings, often the hallmark of a particular architect."

Make's 36-storey tower 1 Leadenhall approved

Designed by the former Foster + Partners architect Ken Shuttleworth’s Make practice, 1 Leadenhall will have 540,000 sq ft of office space, as well as 50,000 sq ft of shops and cafes on the ground, first and second floors. A public terrace will overlook the roof of the adjacent Grade II-listed Victorian market. Construction is due to start next year and the building is expected to open in 2021.

1 Leadenhall, so named due to its location next to the historic Leadenhall Market, will be 182.7-metre (600ft) and 36 stories high. The £400m skyscraper is one of the several new towers being built in the surrounding area, including 1 Undershaft that will be the second-tallest building in Western Europe nearly 300 meters tall and also the reworked 22 Bishopsgate or Pinnacle as it's been nicknamed.

Brookfield is to build a new 700,000 ft2, 37-storey tower in the City of London - and work could begin as early as 2018. Designed by architect Make the plans for the proposed office tower at 1 Leadenhall feature a 9,600 ft2 public terrace with winter garden overlooking the historic Leadenhall Market. The tower will provide 538,000 ft2 of office space plus 51,500 ft2 of retail space on the first three floors.
