Taubman College announces Antje Steinmuller as new Architecture Chair

The University of Michigan’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning has announced Antje Steinmuller as the next chair of the college’s architecture program. Steinmuller is expected to begin her three-year appointment on July 15th and is described by the college as “the leader best poised to strengthen the research and practice, teaching and learning that make Michigan a leader in architectural education.”

Steinmuller is currently an associate professor at the California College of the Arts (CCA), where she has taught for the past 17 years. She currently chairs the Bachelor of Architecture program and co-directs the Urban Works Agency, CCA’s urbanism research lab, where her research explores the role of design at the intersection of citizen-led and city-regulated processes in the production of urban space.

Mississippi State appoints Dominic Lippillo as interim associate dean at the College of Architecture, Art and Design

Mississippi State University has announced the appointment of Professor Dominic Lippillo as the interim associate dean for the institution’s College of Architecture, Art, and Design. The photography professor takes up the position previously filled by Professor Jeffrey Haupt, who retired in November 2022.

Lippillo served as an assistant professor of photography at MSU since 2010 before earning the full rank of professor. He will take up the role of interim associate dean on January 1st, 2024, where he hopes to further the college’s “supportive atmosphere for faculty, staff and students.”

Shima Clarke appointed interim associate dean of Clemson’s College of Architecture, Art, and Construction

Clemson University has announced the appointment of Professor Shima Clarke as the interim associate dean of undergraduate and graduate studies for the university’s newly formed College of Architecture, Art, and Construction (CAAC). Since August, Clarke has served as the acting associate dean of the college, which was itself formed on July 1st.

Clarke describes her top priority in the new role as being to oversee and coordinate all programs and activities in CAAC that support student experience, recruitment, education, retention, graduation, and placement.

Having joined the faculty as an assistant professor in 1998, Clarke achieved full professorship in 2013. Within the college, her research has focused on construction education, integrated project delivery, sustainability, structures, and construction safety.

The Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) has joined its sibling organizations in landscape architecture and planning in opposing the concerted efforts of far-right lawmakers to prevent the inclusion of race and racism topics into curricula in states including Arkansas, Florida, Iowa, South Dakota, and Virginia.

"This united declaration stands as a strong objection to the legislation that silences educators from sharing the histories of the architectural profession. Practitioners, educators, and students must be granted access to the complete narrative. British Architects Registration Board proposes reformed regulatory approach to architectural education and training

The UK's Architects Registration Board (ARB) has published findings and recommendations from a three-month internal consultation aimed at suggesting a series of reforms to the education and professional licensure process for architects in the country.

The Board says it will now move to introduce new Academic and Practice outcomes along with some drafting amendments based on suggestions raised by the consultation's 672 respondents.

Under the proposed changes, the requirement that licensed architects obtain a Part 1 (Bachelor’s) degree would be waived. Part 2 and Part 3 would also be phased out by 2027, replaced by the new 49-pronged ‘outcomes’ path. A one-year-long independent commission aimed at developing further changes to the practical experience component of the process has also been announced after a majority of members surveyed (60%) expressed concerns over dropping the current two-year professional practice requirement.

RIBA decries proposed ARB educational overhaul

A statement from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has called into question the recent slate of educational overhauls proposed by the UK’s Architects Registration Board (ARB) in February in the interests of removing barriers for entry into the field.

In our February 2023 reporting, RIBA’s President Simon Allford said he "[did] not see much change” caused by the reform measures, adding: "The ARB accreditation model does not allow the new courses we are supporting to create a more accessible and open and representative profession. Nor does it speed things up. We need to support courses that recognize and reinforce the need for core skills and competencies but also the essential requirement to equip the next generation to create ever-evolving and appropriately different models of practice."

IAAC team’s mass timber nature observatory floats above a Barcelona forest

A team from the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) has constructed a timber observatory in a Barcelona forest to support analyses of nature. The group of students and researchers from the institution’s Masters in Advanced Ecological Buildings and Biocities program were inspired by the hanging walkways of American biologist Margaret D. Lowman.

Located in the city’s Collserola Natural Park, and named the Forest Lab for Observational Research and Analysis (FLORA), the facility seeks to provide researchers a space to live and work in the forest canopy. Among the observatory’s facilities are a bird radio, bird houses, working and projection space, as well as bird watching spaces.

UK Housing Secretary Michael Gove throws his hat behind the country's traditionalism movement

The UK’s housing chief is throwing his name into the contentious ongoing debate surrounding the role and perception of traditionalism and classical architecture in the country’s design culture and academia.

AIA issues a supplementary guide addressing issues in architectural education

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) together along with the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) has published a new supplement to its Guides for Equitable Practice in order to reflect a renewed focus of university education and institutions.

The supplement, titled Equity in Architectural Education, is intended to provide teachers and administrators with scenarios, actions, and prompts that “inspire discussions about creating welcoming environments to attract and retain those currently underrepresented in academia and in the profession.”

It is also useful to the majority of practitioners whose firms employ student interns and recent graduates, prospective high school students, and others interested in entering the field as its output importantly “defines the concept of culture in architectural education” and subsequent impacts in the working world.

Gensler and Amazon among $4.7 million donors to California College of the Arts supporting diversity and innovation

Gensler and Amazon are among the donors who have gifted $4.7 million to the California College of the Arts (CCA). The funds will be used to support diversity, equity, and innovation in the arts and design field.

CCA received a $1 million gift from the Gensler family and an additional $1 million gift from Gensler as a practice; donations which will establish the M. Arthur Gensler Jr. Center for Design Excellence. According to the college, the newly-established center will “support and enrich learning, teaching, and research in CCA’s Architecture Division” with a focus on supporting students from diverse backgrounds through “tuition scholarships, mentoring, and career development support.”

The donation will extend over ten years, with the first cohort of Gensler Center scholarship recipients set to receive awards this year.

According to the listing, the role would support the department’s mission of providing “an educational environment that encourages the cross-fertilization of knowledge from all of the arts and sciences, where students and teachers are motivated to participate in the most urgent contemporary social, cultural, and environmental issues.”

Mississippi State University studio teaches the value of collaboration between its architecture and building construction science students

Earlier this week, we explored the relationship between architecture and construction science disciplines through the lens of a Building Scientist position at Payette. While the two fields are commonly intertwined within professional practice settings, they are also being implemented in a collaborative design studio taught at Mississippi State University (MSU). Students from the school's architecture and building construction science departments worked together in a unique studio called the PCI Foundation Studio.

After receiving a special grant from the PCI Foundation in 2020 to incorporate "precast concrete into the classroom," MSU Architecture's Associate Professor Alexis Gregory allocated the $100,000 grant to be utilized within architecture courses at the school. This funding was used to develop the Spring 2021 PCI Foundation Studio.

London’s Architectural Association (AA) has named a new leader in its search to replace ousted former director Eva Franch i Gilabert.

Dr. Ingrid Schroder is the new head of the AA beating out Berkeley CED professor emerita Jill Stoner, Clancy Moore director Andrew Clancy, and two other shortlisted candidates to helm the 175-year-old institution. Schroder will remain in her current role as director of the University of Cambridge’s M.Phil in Architecture and Urban Design (MAUD) program until officially stepping into the AA post in late August.

Schroder comes to the position with over 20 years of experience teaching at Cambridge. These are the world's ten top architecture schools for 2022 according to QS World University Rankings

The 2022 edition of the QS World University Rankings has been released. The rankings include 230 individual university programs in 47 locations around the world for Quacquarelli Symonds’ (QS) 12th edition of the annual list.

Mainstays like MIT, ETH Zürich, the Bartlett, and Harvard remained at the top. 38 architecture departments around the world have improved their ranking this year and 49 declined while 125 remained in their previous place from last year.

Among the movers was the Manchester School of Architecture, which made an appearance in the Top 10 for the first time since 2016. The University of Cambridge is the only 2021 top-ten member missing.

Donation by Zaha Hadid Foundation creates scholarships for students from low-income households

The London School of Architecture has announced a scholarship program for students from low-income households. The initiative will see three recipients each awarded £36,000 (approximately $47,000), covering the full fees and associated costs of the LSA’s two-year MArch program. The funding for the scholarship was made viable due to a donation from the Zaha Hadid Foundation.

The initiative is aimed at promising prospective Masters students from low-income backgrounds, defined as those whose household income is below £25,000 ($32,000). To qualify, applicants must either be over 25 and not financially dependent on parents or under 25 and not financially dependent on parents. The scholarship is also open to refugees who would otherwise be unable to pursue their studies, even if financially dependent on parents or relatives.

IAAC students build advanced prototype greenhouse for food and energy production

The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) has unveiled a prototype greenhouse which responds to urban food and energy needs. The Solar Greenhouse was designed and built by a team of students, professionals, and experts from the school’s Masters in Advanced Ecological Buildings and Biocities program, and was constructed in a natural park on the outskirts of Barcelona.

The greenhouse has been designed to be replicated in rural and urban areas, and potentially to populate the rooftops of urban buildings. Responding to the European Union’s zero-emission goals for 2050, the project seeks to return food and energy production to cities with a compact structure that uses solar energy, sustainable materials, and advanced urban farming technology.

$1 million donated to UT Austin School of Architecture honoring John S. Chase, their first Black graduate

The University of Texas at Austin’s School of Architecture has received a $1 million donation honoring John S. Chase, the first Black graduate of the school and the first Black licensed architect in the state of Texas. The donation has been provided by Tony Chase and his wife Dr. Dina Alsowayel. An entrepreneur, law professor, and civic leader based in Houston, Tony Chase is also the son of John S. Chase.

The $1 million donation will create two new permanent endowments. The first, named the John S. Chase Family Endowed Graduate Fellowship, will be used primarily to increase diversity and representation in the profession by recruiting graduates of historically Black colleges and universities. Meanwhile, the John S. Chase Family Endowed Professorship in Architecture will help recruit and retain outstanding faculty and support their research of the built environment.

Pratt and Clemson both launch fellowships for underrepresented architecture students

The Pratt Institute and Clemson University have each launched fellowships within their design and architecture schools focused on students from underserved or underrepresented communities.

The Pratt Institute’s initiative, titled the Diamonstein-Spielvogel Fellowship program, will focus on students from underserved communities whose work concentrates on issues related to climate change. The fellowship will be awarded to two students for the first year of graduate study at Pratt; one in the School of Architecture and one in the School of Design.

The legacy of one of the leading design colleges in America is being examined as such in a new exhibition called Building in China: A Century of Dialogues on Modern Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania’s Stuart Weitzman School of Design in Philadelphia.

The exhibition is presented in unison with Southeast University School of Architecture and the Tongji University College of Architecture and Urban Planning and features a two-part format that looks first at the historical impacts the university has had on the development of architecture in the country after 1920.

Pratt Institute names Stephen Slaughter new chair of undergraduate architecture

The Pratt Institute has named Stephen Slaughter as their new chair of undergraduate architecture. Slaughter, who is currently a visiting associate professor at Pratt’s Graduate Architecture and Urban Design Program, will assume the role on July 1st 2022.

In his new position, Slaughter will oversee a department of 700 students and 180 faculty, leading a program that has been ranked among the top ten of its kind in the United States every year since 2000 by DesignIntelligence.

“I am thrilled to step into this role at Pratt and look forward to engaging with the community to push forward critical conversations about inclusivity in the fields of architecture and design,” Slaughter said. “Architecture is for everyone and in educating the next generation of architects, I hope to instill this idea. Free 3D planning tool launched to help schools teach architecture

Planner 5D, a digital design tool, has created a free educational version to help schools teach architecture and design. The tool, which allows users to generate 3D home designs, is offering its free educational licenses to “encourage students to foster their creativity in a digital realm while learning design principles.” The tool is available to teachers worldwide, who can download up to 100 free educational licenses for use by students.

The initiative has been launched to facilitate the teaching of STEM subjects to school kids, including focuses on art, architecture, engineering, and interior design. The app is centered on “problem based learning”, which invites students to develop computational skills by studying and solving home design challenges using a library of 6000 objects.

UCLA’s BruinHub will give respite to students facing long commutes and housing insecurity

The UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture, in collaboration with cityLAB, has officially opened the BruinHub, a first-of-its-kind space serving UCLA students facing long commutes or housing insecurity. Located in the John Wooden Center, the BruinHub will be a 24/7 space with facilities for students to nap, rest, study, store belongings, and wait out traffic.

The design of the BruinHub centers on Study Pods; prefabricated units constructed from machine-cut OSB and finished with vibrant-colored fabrics. Each pod contains a flexible bench which can be used for sleeping or studying, as well as a worktop, reading lamp, storage space, and power outlet. The wider facility also includes WiFi, charging stations, a food prep station, personal storage, and a hub for distributing important campus information and services. The hub has been designed to meet COVID-based safety standards for sanitizing and social distancing.

The latest NCARB report shows how architectural education changed in 2020

The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) has published new data giving insights into the growth of architectural education throughout the 2019/2020 academic year. As part of their tenth annual NCARB by the Numbers report, NCARB examined the number of individuals beginning, continuing, and graduating from architectural education throughout the academic year as well as information on demographics.

Overall, the number of new and total enrollments in NAAB-accredited programs continued to rise for the 2019/2020 academic year, as did the number of graduates. 7,968 new students enrolled in an NAAB program in the 2019/2020 cycle, representing a 3% increase on the previous year, and a third consecutive year of steady growth. Of those, 51% enrolled in a Bachelor of Architecture, 48% enrolled in a Master of Architecture, and less than 1% enrolled in a Doctor of Architecture. Just over half of new students (51%) were women.

The Penn State College of Arts and Architecture has announced Folayemi “Fo” Wilson as their associate dean for access and equity. Wilson will be the first individual to take up the inaugural role, which will be dedicated to helping Penn State question and address assumptions about diversity, inclusion, access and equity. Welcoming Wilson the position, B. Stephen Carpenter II, dean of the College of Arts and Architecture said “[Wilson’s] efforts will lead us forward in response to our commitment to addressing social, cultural, and institutional challenges.”

Wilson is currently co-director of academic diversity, equity and inclusion at Columbia College Chicago, where she is also a professor of art and art history. Two new resource guides have been made available to help students and educators explore careers in architecture. “Your Guide to a Career in Architecture” is designed for high school students interested in joining the architectural community, while “Your Guide to Helping Students Consider a Career in Architecture” is intended for school counselors and educators to advise students through the process.

Dearborn will serve through June of 2021 and is expected to focus on issues relating to racial justice within the ACSA organization and throughout field of architectural education, among other topics. Rashida Ng of Temple University served as the previous ACSA President.

Aside from her longtime involvement with ACSA and status as a licensed architect, Dr. Dearborn is also a Professor of Architecture and the Chair of Health and Wellbeing at the University of Illinois School of Architecture in Urbana-Champaign. She earned a B.ARCH from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, an M.ARCH from the University of Oregon, and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
