Mississippi State appoints Dominic Lippillo as interim associate dean at the College of Architecture, Art and Design

Mississippi State University has announced the appointment of Professor Dominic Lippillo as the interim associate dean for the institution’s College of Architecture, Art, and Design. The photography professor takes up the position previously filled by Professor Jeffrey Haupt, who retired in November 2022.

Lippillo served as an assistant professor of photography at MSU since 2010 before earning the full rank of professor. He will take up the role of interim associate dean on January 1st, 2024, where he hopes to further the college’s “supportive atmosphere for faculty, staff and students.”

Clemson University has announced the appointment of Professor Shima Clarke as the interim associate dean of undergraduate and graduate studies for the university’s newly formed College of Architecture, Art, and Construction (CAAC). Since August, Clarke has served as the acting associate dean of the college, which was itself formed on July 1st.

Clarke describes her top priority in the new role as being to oversee and coordinate all programs and activities in CAAC that support student experience, recruitment, education, retention, graduation, and placement.

The University of Southern California (USC) today announced the appointment of renowned architect and educator Brett Steele as its new dean for the School of Architecture.

Steele will be stepping in to replace interim dean Willow Bay, who was appointed back in July 2022, following the quiet departure of former architecture dean Milton Curry.

Steele is no stranger to leading prominent schools of architecture. Prior to his new future position at USC, he served as UCLA's School of the Arts and Architecture dean since 2017. The University of Minnesota's College of Design has announced designer, anthropologist, educator, and researcher Dr. Prasad Boradkar as its new dean following a nationwide search.

The Cooper Union has announced an update in its search to find a new permanent Dean of The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture.

In a letter to the schoolwide community, the Board of Trustees announced the continuation of Hayley Eber as Acting Dean and the addition of South African-born architect Mokena Makeka as its first Special Advisor to the Vice President of Academic Affairs following an exhaustive two-year community feedback process.

The Board shared that a four-candidate review did not yield an adequate long-term hire for the Dean’s position in the view of the committee, which has been occupied by Eber on an interim basis since 2019.

Heather Woofter has been appointed dean of the University of Texas at Austin’s School of Architecture (UTSOA) following a national search to replace Michelle Addington following her successful tenure, which began in July of 2017.

She is currently the Director of the College of Architecture and the Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Design at Washington University in St. Louis's Sam Fox School of Design and will begin her new role at UTSOA effective August 15. Morgan State University's School of Architecture and Planning has announced the appointment of Dr. Abimbola O. Asojo as the school's new dean.

Dr. Asojo is the second dean in the school's history following the tenure of former dean Mary Anne Akers, the school's founding dean who held the position for 14 years.

The Pratt Institute’s School of Architecture has just announced the appointment of urban designer and academic Quilian Riano as its new Dean.

Riano, who has been serving as the school’s Interim Dean since last August, will officially step into the role on May 8th. He joined Pratt’s faculty as an Assistant Dean in 2021 after previous teaching positions at Kent State University, Columbia, Syracuse, and Boston’s Wentworth Institute of Technology, among other campuses. Montana State University has announced Dean Adams as the institution’s next dean of the College of Arts and Architecture. Adams will take up the new position on July 1st, where he will oversee 1,100 students across schools of architecture, art, music, film, and photography.

Kansas State University has announced architect Michael McClure as the new dean of its College of Architecture, Planning & Design.

The emerymcclure architecture co-founder and current University of Louisiana at Lafayette professor was appointed following a national search and will step into the office effective July 1st, according to the university. The Syracuse University School of Architecture has announced the reappointment of Dean Michael A. Speaks to another five-year term.

Speaks, at the helm since 2013, has been instrumental in establishing numerous academic and faculty-focused programs, including the Harry der Boghosian Endowed Fellowship Program for emerging academics in architecture.

The former Dean of the University of Kentucky College of Design also worked to establish the school’s China Studies program, which now has studios in Beijing and Shanghai, along with a host of academic exchanges and scholarship programs in South Korea and Taiwan respectively.

California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo has announced that Christine Theodoropoulos, Dean of the institute’s College of Architecture and Environmental Design, is to retire. Upon joining Cal Poly in 2012, Theodoropoulos became the first woman to serve as dean of the college, and after more than a decade in the position, will become the second-longest-serving dean in the college’s 75-year history.

Academic ranking systems, and their methodology, in particular, are once again at the center of a nationwide conversation that has brought together the deans of sixteen prominent architecture schools. In a recently-published joint letter, the signees voice their concern over what they call "lack of rigor" — and the subsequent negative implications on the design community — of the annual DesignIntelligence survey and ranking, describing it as "out of touch" with the goals and ambitions of their respective programs.

"However well-intentioned they may be," the letter states, "we believe that the DI rankings have the potential to create a disservice to the public." While a response from Harriss hasn't been provided to the public, Provost Heiland commented: "I write to share the news that, after three years leading the School of Architecture, Dean Harriet Harriss will — prior to the fall semester — transition into a leave to pursue research and will subsequently join the faculty," adding, "This transition will allow her [Harriss] to focus on advancing her expertise in the intersection of climate justice pedagogy, practice, and policy in service to the School's strategic agenda and strength in this area."

Mo Zell appointed UW-Milwaukee's School of Architecture & Planning Interim Dean

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's School of Architecture and Planning (SARUP) has announced Mo Zell as its Interim Dean.

Zell has been an impactful fixture at SARUP, starting her career at the school as an assistant professor in 2008. Since then, she has taught several foundational design studios, acted as Associate Dean from 2012–18, and in 2018 was SARUP's first woman to be a Department Chair.

Before working at SARUP, Zell taught at Yale University, South Carolina School of Arts and Humanities, Clemson University, North Carolina State University, and Northeastern University. Her extensive background as an educator and academic leader is paired with her experience as a licensed architect. In addition, she runs the award-winning design and research practice bauenstudio with her partner Marc Roehrle.
