MVRDV’s jagged Grotius Towers scheme debuts in The Hague

Five years after being first announced, Dutch mainstay MVRDV’s Grotius Towers apartment scheme has been completed in The Hague, the country’s third largest city.

In a project announcement, the studio described their new creation rather accurately as “an eye-catching new addition to the skyline of The Hague.” It is defined by two 100- and 120-meter-tall (328 and 393 feet, respectively) towers that “crumble” asymmetrically from the top down, combining with a series of setbacks and stacked terraces to create a distinctive jagged massing carefully placed on a lot adjacent to the city’s Central Station.

OMA renovates the Rijnstraat 8 government office building into a transparent workspace

In The Hague, the Dutch King officially opened the OMA-designed Rijnstraat 8 government building yesterday. With OMA Partner Ellen van Loon and architect Bart Nicolaas as the project leads, the firm helped renovate the former VROM building, which marks the first big step in the Dutch government's larger masterplan to reduce their real estate in the political capital.

Showing off seemingly vast transparent glass facades, the new 100,000 m2 Rijnstraat 8 houses the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers, and the Immigration and Naturalisation Service.

New U.S. Embassy in The Hague, Netherlands breaks ground

Over in The Hague in The Netherlands, the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations (OBO) celebrated the groundbreaking of the new U.S. Embassy earlier this week. Located on a 10-acre site in the Wassenaar municipality, some features of the $206 million project will include a chancery office building, a U.S. Marine Corps residence, a utility building, and multiple access pavilions.

Moore Ruble Yudell Architects & Planners of Santa Monica, CA will be project architect with Caddell Construction Company of Montgomery, AL for construction.

Wiel Arets Architects announced today the completion of the Anna van Buerenplein (AvB) Tower located in The Hague in The Netherlands.
