The plan is for it to be powered by on-site renewables, leveraging a micro-irrigation system with rainwater harvesting, geothermal heat pumps, a network of photovoltaic 'trees', and a modular, semi-glazed facade system to meet targets set by the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS).

The crystallisation of salt in the sabkhas offers a blueprint for an alternative to Portland cement, the production of which accounts for 8% of global carbon dioxide emissions.”

The mixed-use project will be part of the 18-hectare Makers District development near the Saadiyat Island cultural hub.

The “mini-towers”, as MVRDV describes, will surround a central public plaza that is accessible from all directions of the plot.
