The end of the Spring 2024 academic term is rapidly approaching, so let's take a look at some of the late-semester events, reviews, and lectures still in store for our Archinect Partner Schools SCI-Arc, Pratt Institute, Tulane University, UCLA, Temple University, University of Oregon, Cranbrook Academy of Art, and New York Institute of Technology.

BIG creates mirrored installation for Audi at Milan Design Week

Bjarke Ingels Group has designed an installation for the car brand Audi, installed at Milan Design Week. Titled ‘Reflaction,’ a play on the words “reflection” and “action,” the installation seeks to convey how “our actions in the world reflect the very essence of our existence,” according to Audi.

The installation is configured as a ‘plus’ symbol when viewed from above, dividing the site into four spaces constructed from a minimal selection of materials. The walls of the installation are formed of 33 x 28-foot mirrors, which, according to Audi, “creates an immersive spatial illusion, highlighting the brand's continuous effort to overcome the limits of innovation.”

SCI-Arc's immersive 2024 Spring Show exhibition to feature a colorful assortment of new student work

SCI-Arc, an Archinect Partner School, is hosting its annual Spring Show exhibition later this month that will feature the work of undergraduate and graduate students from all school programs. The show takes place on its LA Arts District campus, beginning with the opening reception at 6 PM on Saturday, April 27th.

The annual exhibition is meant to highlight students' work and the diversity of SCI-Arc’s course offerings via four immersive monochromatic rooms, each with different textures covering its surfaces. The curator of this year’s Spring Show, postgraduate Fiction and Entertainment program faculty Alexey Marfin, tells Archinect: "The spaces operate on two scales: The bold statement seen from afar, but also the fine material detail seen on closer inspection."

MAD Architects creates Milan Design Week pavilion inspired by mountains

MAD Architects has completed its latest installation for Milan Design Week. Titled ‘Amazing Walk.’ the project marks the seventh time MAD has participated in the event.

Set within the Cortile della Farmacia courtyard at the University of Milan, the ‘Amazing Walk’ seeks to “blur the boundary between built and natural environments in a surreal way.” Standing 24.6 feet tall, the internal column-free piece is formed of hundreds of triangular elements configured to reflect “the shape of mountains.”

The installation is constructed from an aluminum alloy covered in a semi-permeable composite membrane. The resulting finish offers varying visuals under different lighting conditions while, during the night, lights and mist blur the edges of the materials to give the illusion that the pavilion is floating.

David Lynch discusses his scenographic installation at Salone del Mobile with curator Antonio Monda

David Lynch is participating in this year's Salone del Mobile with an installation titled ‘Interiors by David Lynch. Thinking Room’ he designed to offer visitors of the fair a respite while serving tribute to the lurid scenography fans of his classic films Blue Velvet and Lost Highway will find pleasingly familiar.

The centerpiece of the installation is an oversized wooden armchair, designed by Lynch himself, with intricate brass tubes positioned overhead, creating a striking visual and tactile experience. Lynch's approach to design reflects his cinematic vision, where every element is imbued with meaning and emotion.

Gordon Kipping's mass timber installation 'Maison de Cartes' is now open at SCI-Arc

SCI-Arc opened a new exhibition last Friday, curated by Class of 1995 M.Arch graduate Gordon Kipping, that documents the development of mass timber within contemporary architecture.

Inspired by Le Corbusier’s 1914–15 Dom-Ino House prototype, Maison de Cartes presents examples both in the form of physical models and via a special augmented reality (AR) application to deliver a narrative about timber's ability and potential to meet the challenge of climate change in different typological contexts worldwide.

The exhibition culminates years of research into engineering and sustainable construction methods and Kipping's belief that timber architecture can play a role in alleviating the impinging housing crisis in Los Angeles and abroad.

Shigeru Ban: The Paper Log House opens at The Glass House with the help of Cooper Union architecture students

Archinect has received first photos of Shigeru Ban Architects’ new collaborative installation project with students from The Cooper Union Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture at The Glass House in New Canaan, Connecticut.

A product of this semester’s Building Technology course, Shigeru Ban: The Paper Log House honors the 75th anniversary of one of America’s foremost examples of modernism with a special nine-month run that began this week, April 15th, and will run until December 15th.

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival has completed work on the 2024 edition of its on-site art program. The acclaimed event is taking place across two weekends: April 12–14 and 19–21.

The Department of Architecture at East Los Angeles College (ELAC) has shared its late semester schedule of public speaking events as part of our Get Lectured rundown for the Spring 2024 term.

Events this semester begin on Tuesday, April 16, with an appearance from Carmen Suero, the Principal of Good Project Company. Suero is followed next on May 7 by urban planning expert Jonathan Pacheco Bell of the group Embedded Planning. The semester concludes on May 14 with a lecture from Güvenç Özel of Ozel Office.

MoMA exhibition on 20th-century Latin American design is a 'gem' says Michael Kimmelman

The show is a gem. It focuses on domestic design from six countries (Colombia, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Chile and Venezuela), produced between 1940 and 1980. Latin America had entered a period of transformation, industrial expansion and creativity. Across the region, design was becoming institutionalized as a profession, opening up new avenues, especially for women.

Critic Michael Kimmelman has heaped praise on the 'Crafting Modernity: Design in Latin America, 1940–1980' MoMA exhibition in a new piece for The New York Times. As we reported in December of last year, the show looks at the growth of modernism through an industrial and entrepreneurial lens, using a selection of examples from well-known and revered architects and designers such as Joaquim Tenreiro, Lina Bo Bardi, and Oscar Niemeyer.

"The role that women and immigrants played in shaping professional design and developing a national design vocabulary in Latin America will be emphasized, including the work of designers such as Clara Porset in Mexico, Cornelis Zitman in Venezuela, and Susi Aczel in Argentina," MoMA said about their exhibition at the time.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta and Ruth Carter have been announced as keynote speakers for the upcoming AIA Conference on Architecture & Design 2024. Gupta will deliver his speech to the Washington D.C. conference on June 7th, with Carter delivering her speech on June 8th.

Gupta is the Chief Medical Correspondent for CNN, where he reports on health and medical news domestically and internationally. “Since 2001, Gupta has covered some of the world’s most important public health and safety stories, including the COVID-19 pandemic — reaffirming his role as a trusted guide to millions of viewers navigating between facts and fiction,” the AIA said.

This month, the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) is set to unveil Maison de Cartes, an exhibition by Gordon Kipping that delves into the innovative use of timber in contemporary architecture. Inspired by the principles of Maison Dom-ino by Le Corbusier, Kipping reimagines construction for the modern era, with a particular emphasis on combatting climate change.

Kipping champions the use of mass timber as a sustainable alternative to the carbon-heavy materials of steel and concrete, which are major contributors to global CO2 emissions. Sou Fujimoto’s studio has shared new construction images of the forthcoming Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai's The Grand Roof circular wooden container structure, a year ahead of the start of the six-month fair, which begins on April 13th, 2025.

The enormous structure is 1,969 feet (600 meters) in diameter and will serve as the main circulatory route for the exhibition, which includes 161 total participating countries/locations.

Photos of the central hub for Perth Design Week, the eight-day event taking place now in the Western Australia capital, have been revealed by OMA to go along with the start of festivities.

Their colorful design for PRINCIPLES Square is located inside Cathedral Square in Perth's city center and features the Australian debut of the firm's office furniture collaboration with UniFor, which first premiered at Milan Design Week in 2022.

Intended as the main gathering space for Design Week, the concept creates a variety of socializing and spatial scenarios. For the event's second edition, no less than 20 events will be hosted there. Philippe Braun, the project's associate-in-charge, told the press that its realization "stimulated us to further explore how the collection can be applied beyond the typical."

Archinect readers predict the 2024 Pritzker Prize winner

Our annual Archinect readers’ predictions for this year’s Pritzker Architecture Prize have once again spurred a lively discussion forum thread full of guesses as to which architect will become the 53rd official laureate when the prize is announced on Tuesday, March 5.

Last year, our social media polls had the eventual winner, David Chipperfield, over a group of frontrunners that mostly carried over to 2024, namely Jeanne Gang, Kengo Kuma, and Bjarke Ingels.

Alejandro Aravena (also the 2016 Pritzker laureate) is the jury chair for the sixth consecutive year, joined by the prize’s Executive Director Manuela Lucá-Dazio; Columbia GSAPP professor Barry Bergdoll; Yale SoA dean Deborah Berke; retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer; the critic and Brazilian Ambassador to India André Aranha Corrêa do Lago; and the 2010 and 2012 laureates Kazuyo Sejima and Wang Shu.

Frank Gehry's 'Ruminations' comes to Madison Avenue

The Gagosian Gallery’s Madison Avenue location has recently opened an exhibition of Frank Gehry artworks titled Ruminations.

On view until April 6th, the gallery will be showing recent works Gehry’s team says are in dialog with the architect’s engagements with fluid aquatic animal forms that date to an inspirational early-80s commission with the Formica Corporation.

Notably, the show features the East Coast debut of Gehry’s "Crocodile Lamp" sculpture besides selected works on paper and other elaborations on the animal theme.

Get Lectured: Texas Tech University, Spring '24

Texas Tech University’s Huckabee College of Architecture has shared lecture details for the Spring term related to its 2023–24 Publicness programming for our Get Lectured preview of different events in store this semester.

The school shares: “Publicness refers to the power of architecture and design to shape our built environment for the benefit of society at large. It celebrates conditions of interaction, adaptability, collaboration, spontaneity, and openness.”

HKS Venues Design Director and Principal Lance Evans began the semester on January 29 with an overview of his work at the firm, including his role as the Lead Architect of SoFi Stadium. It's not too late yet to cast a vote for your favorite Fall '23 architecture school lecture poster!

The reader poll to select the most popular design of the 32 posters we presented for that academic term in our ongoing Get Lectured series opened earlier this month and still runs until Tuesday, February 20, 5:30 p.m. Pacific Time.

Currently, the school whose lecture poster received the most votes is The David R. Ravin School of Architecture at UNC Charlotte with 19.8%, ahead of the Pratt Institute School of Architecture and UCLA's School of Architecture and Urban Design, which are both tied in second place with 12.4% of votes each. In third place at the moment is Florida Atlantic University School of Architecture at 7.7% of votes with a (literal) stand-out poster design of three-dimensional folded paper.

Get Lectured: University of Michigan, Spring '24

The University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning has announced its Winter 2024 public speakers series as part of our Get Lectured rundown for the new academic term.

The first event in the school’s Building Culture series will take place today, February 16, with the launch of Charles Waldheim and Jeffrey Nesbit’s new title, Technical Lands: A Critical Primer. Japanese practitioner Jo Nagasaka will follow next on February 19, preceding a presentation from Kwong Von Glinow founders Lap Chi Kwong and Alison Von Glinow on March 4. Carlos Bedoya of the Mexico City studio Productura follows their appearance on March 18.

Dan Adams and Marie Law Adams of the Massachusetts-based Landing Studio will be on campus on March 25 for a lecture, followed on April 1 by another on the early-20th century German architect and Bauhaus instructor Ludwig Hilberseimer from Rice University's Scott Coleman.

Burning Man unveils first-ever Black Rock City Temple design from female BIPOC lead artist

Burning Man’s official 2024 Temple for Black Rock City has been unveiled as an optimistic design rising to a height of 70 feet and shrowded in a woven latticed screen cladding with repeated neo-Gothic archways that carry a metaphor of togetherness amidst a backdrop of global conflict.

The design took its charge from notable past iterations from David Best and will be called 'Temple of Together' as denoted by its repeated motif of hands touching in unison. Get Lectured: Syracuse University, Spring '24

The Syracuse University School of Architecture has shared its public speaking information as part of our Get Lectured look at different events in store on campus for the Spring semester.

Oberlander Prize winner Julie Bargmann will visit campus on February 13 as part of the Syracuse Symposium series and be followed by an appearance from Rachely Rotem of MODU, who will deliver the L.C. Dillenback Lecture February 15. She is followed by a lecture from assistant professor Jess Myers on February 16. A workshop with UT Austin SoA Associate Dean Korey Bieg follows on February 22, and the next month begins with a visit from current Harvard Loeb Fellow Adi Kumar on March 1.

March continues with a special presentation on Chinese calligraphy with Shishu Su on March 22. His appearance precedes the The Landscape of Women’s Bodily Autonomy symposium on March 26. Trahan Architects unveils U.S. pavilion design for Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai

Trahan Architects has unveiled its USA Pavilion design for World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan. The county’s official entry will play host to a slate of exhibitions designed to showcase American scientific exploration and entrepreneurship and will be completed by an official project team that includes HOOD Design, Dot Dash, and several other specialty studios.

Chicago's former Mayor and the current U.S. Ambassador to Japan, Rahm Emanuel, says it will stand as "an embodiment of American spirit." Organizers are expecting approximately 30 million visitors.

Visitors will pass through a ringed wall that surrounds the Expo before entering the pavilion, which is separated into two wings that are connected via a suspended cubic form serving as a skybridge.

With our Get Lectured series, showcasing upcoming public lectures at architecture schools, well into the current Spring academic term, it's a great opportunity to take a look back and let the Archinect audience be the judge of the graphic prowess the 32 poster designs we presented during the Fall 2023 term had to offer.

In our most recent poll last September, the University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture took the top prizes for their Fall '22 and Spring '23 lecture poster designs, while the third place went to the University of Illinois Chicago School of Architecture's Spring '23 poster, followed by a fourth-place tie from the University of Milwaukee School of Architecture & Urban Planning and their Fall '22 and Spring '23 lecture posters.

Get Lectured: University of Arkansas, Spring ‘24

Today, our Get Lectured series continues with a look at the events and lectures taking place in the Spring semester at the University of Arkansas Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design in Fayetteville.

The term begins with a lecture from University of Houston professor Andrew Kudless on February 5, followed by an appearance from Canadian 5468796 architecture co-founder Johanna Hurme on February 26. The school’s FAY AI workshop, featuring presentations from academics Joshua Vermillion, Clay Odom, and Kory Bieg, will also take place from February 5–9 in Vol Walker Hall.

March begins with a lecture from Simon David, the principal of New York’s Office of Strategy + Design (OSD), on March 4. He is followed by Susan Jones, the founder of atelierjones, on March 13. The Pratt Institute School of Architecture has shared its public lecture series details as part of our Get Lectured look at the different events taking place on campus this Spring term.

The semester continues with the previous term’s theme of "cohabitations." The school shares: "Cohabitations is both a descriptive adjective, a qualifying adverb and a transitive verb that calls us all to action. The School of Architecture & Urban Planning at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has shared its Spring '24 events lineup as part of our Get Lectured rundown of different public programs in store on campuses in the new academic term.

The events begin on January 31 with a presentation on aging strategies and livable cities from the AARP’s Darrin Wasniewski and Suleyman Bahceci. The focus on cities and transportation continues with a talk from planning expert Barry Gore on February 21. Joseph Altshuler follows his appearance on February 23, preceding another on the topic of affordable housing from Matt Wachter and Larry Kilmer II on March 6.

Get Lectured: University of South Florida, Spring '24

The University of South Florida School of Architecture & Community Design has shared its list of speakers for the Spring semester as part of our Get Lectured look at the different public programs in store for the new term.

The lectures began with a talk from David Baker Architects principal Amanda Loper on January 23 and will continue with another lecture from MIT and USF faculty member Jan Wampler on February 13. SteinmetzDeMeyer principal Nico Steinmetz follows next with his visit on February 20, preceding a lecture from Jonathan Tate on March 19.

Lectures continue with Harvard GSD professor Charles Waldheim’s visit on March 26, followed by an appearance from the TU Delft Dean of Architecture Dick Van Gameren to close the semester on May 2.

Get Lectured: Woodbury University, Spring '24

Get Lectured continues its Spring 2024 roundup today with a look a the speakers and events in store at the Woodbury University School of Architecture in Los Angeles over the upcoming weeks and months.

The semester begins with a special Welding Workshop and lecture presentation from Austrian artist Thea Moelle on Thursday, January 25. That event is followed by a guest lecture and tour of Black modernist designs around L.A. with the influential Hood Century architectural documenter Jerald Cooper from February 23-25.

Be sure not to miss the trio of student, guest, and faculty exhibitions that open in the school’s Wedge Gallery on February 2, March 1, and April 5, respectively. Finally, there are also a pair of faculty-led symposiums to check out, beginning with the Association for Women in Architecture and Design presentation on March 26 and ending with Conversations About Buildings and Food with faculty members Scrap Marshall and Paulette Singley on April 19.
