The long hours, harsh criticisms, and competition amongst peers are only a few factors the student faces daily. And, of course, there’s the question of the material costs that come along with model building, 3D printing, software, computers, and the pile of other commodities one must acquire during their time in school. Of course, there are those students who are fortunate enough to have the funds needed to do as they desire during their academic progression. But, there are also those who can hardly afford to buy a few sheets of material. Do they just take out a loan to keep up with the more well-off students? What if their professors expect them to use an expensive material and they do not have the means to obtain them?

And while many may have thought the difficult part was turning in the applications, they are probably figuring out by now, that making a decision on which program to accept can be just as taxing.

In the United States, around 40 million people currently hold student debt. This is a population that is greater than that of many countries. While, over the last 14 years, the average salary for young people has decreased by 10%, student debt has increased by nearly 500%. For most Americans, to become educated means to take on a relationship with banks that will last for years. But for young American architects the situation is even worse; the amount of schooling required to be able to practice professionally means taking on debt that you may be paying off for the rest of your life.
