Few voices have had a more significant impact on the discipline at large than I.M. Pei. His projects and ethos have shaped and an endless number of pupils both directly and indirectly, and he will continue to impact the world at large through the echos of his teachings.

With his recent passing, we take the time to look back and listen to the words, see the images and walk through time alongside I.M Pei to garner a broader view of his lasting impact on the discipline at large.

Soapbox is a weekly series delivering a curated set of lectures, talks and symposia concerning contemporary themes but explored through the archives of lectures past and present. With the plethora of lectures, talks, symposia and panels occurring world wide on a daily basis, how can we begin to keep up and if not, find them once they are gone? Soapbox looks to assemble a selection of recent, archived and outlier lectures surrounding a given theme. Soapbox looks to curate this never-ending library of ideas into an engaging and diverse list of thoughts and provocations. Soapbox is just that, a collection aimed at discovering the occasional needle in a haystack.

Just like planning out the look of your presentation, taking your time and planning ahead will take you a long way when putting together your script. Practicing again and again will give the polish you need to seal the deal. Take a few friends out for coffee and talk them through it. Refine your thoughts in the shower. Present again in front of the mirror, looking at yourself in the eye. The more you run through it, the surer you’ll feel about it.

Ray Kappe, founder of SCI-Arc, revisits the school's roots

Distinguished by nearly forty-five years of SCI-Arc history between them, founding director Ray Kappe sat with current director Hernan Diaz Alonso last Wednesday evening for a reflective public conversation at the school. Part of SCI-Arc’s “Duel + Duet” speaker series, where a visiting figure is interviewed by a leader at the school, Alonso prompted Kappe to chart the school's historical narrative, touching on both the exciting possibilities and potentially debilitating difficulties inherent to running an independent educational institution – no less true today than they were in the 1970s.

‘The reality I have known no longer exists’ laments the narrator at the loss of the Paris of his youth. This extract from Marcel Proust’s ‘A la recherché du temps perdu’ (In Search of Lost Time), is referred to in Alexander Tzonis and Liane Lefaivre’s seminal essay ‘Why Critical Regionalism today?’ in an attempt to poetically capture the concept of the loss of a place and its identity. A loss synonymous with modern architecture, particularly in relation to contemporary global development , in this essay they argue for a ‘Regionalist Architecture’ , an architecture of place making which preserves the fibres of ‘collective social structures and the collective representations’(i) that are etched within community and place ; things that cannot be recaptured if lost.
