With the grand opening of Apple’s brand new Chicago outpost this month, it appears that the tech giant’s new line of stores, recently renamed "town squares", has well and truly dropped. We saw a sneak peek of their glass curtain wall system and super slim roof lines at the Apple Park this year but it now appears that this is more than just a one-off thing for their big time California HQ; it seems that this is their latest rendition of Apple Architecture, delivered by Foster + Partners.

Throughout modern history, the shattered transparent envelope has, in various ways, indexed social crises wherein revolution leads to the dismantling of the crystalline boundaries between public and private property. From the Watts Rebellion, WTO, and G8 protests to the 2011 London Riots, Black Lives Matter protests, and the inauguration of Donald J. Trump, the shattered glass window repeatedly proves to be a site of counter-identification with systems of oppression under late capitalism. Learning from these events, how might we differently consider the act of window-breaking beyond the conventional understandings of protest and felony, and instead, reframe it as an intersubjective form of resistance and disavowal?

It seems to me unquestionable that an anti-capitalist world—a society that emphasizes process over product, lived experience over representations—would look very different from the one we currently inhabit. The distinguishing characteristics of that world are more difficult to determine. In what way would a historically unique organization of labor yield a correspondingly unique architecture?
