Jade Residence

Keep the business within reach.

HOW CAN A RETIREMENT HOME EARN ITS KEEP?

Jade Residence, completed in 2014

The Jade Residence is strategically sited adjacent to the family business, a “doo-wop” motel located in Wildwood, NY. The project does double duty; it is a vacation home that works hard and a retirement home with space for the next generation.

On the ground-floor, two rental units replicating the original motel act as the foundation to the family’s dwelling. These spaces can act both as an extension of the family’s motel during busy times or as extra space for visiting family and friends.

The second floor features a double-height living room that connects the master suite with the guest level above.  Two large openings towards the breeze and views of the ocean and motel pool allow the residences to keep an eye on their adjacent property. Light monitors orient due south to maximizing solar gain on collectors outside while providing constant diffused light to the interior through north facing windows.

A geo-thermal system and passive ventilation reduce the extremes of the heating/cooling load and necessity for mechanical HVAC except for the most severe days. Standard cladding and window units are customized to create a hurricane-resistant rain screen. The varied modular units of the ground-floor’s glazed cinderblock are translated to the upper levels to create playful openings at heights for adults and children alike. Material details translate the doo-wop resort vocabulary into a contemporary idiom. The color pallet transforms from richly saturated color at the heart to increasing lightness at the periphery.
