In my role as the Project Manager and Designer, it was my job to make sure that the designs for this 6-level Brownstone renovation project on the Upper West Side of Manhattan were not only completed according to my design vision, but also to ensure that this project was finished on-time, on budget and with minimal neighborhood disturbance.
This building is set in a historic, landmarked district of New York City, so there were many things to be accounted for in terms of maintaining the exterior integrity of this structure. At the same time, we were designing a modern women's health facility, so the blending of the classic structure with modern, soothing interiors that cater to the needs and health of the patients was of utmost importance and difficulty.
From the Cellar to the Penthouse level, the entire structure had to be stripped to its bones. This building is 100+ years old and has seen many different tenants from all walks of life and business. We capitalized on its vibrant history to pay homage to its past in many places throughout the building but leaving exposed original walls, and adding subtle, classic elements to the detailing like classic trim moldings and marble window sills. From there we began to play with more modern, natural materials and colors to help sooth patients coming in for their fertility treatments. This is a very high-tech medical business that needs to be balanced with soothing and tranquil design notes, as the patients coming to Neway Medical are going through a very stressful time in their lives.
This project was as much a study in patient/staff flow, density and need as it was a design project. Half of my job was working with the patients and the medical staff to learn about what they needed, where they saw their practice heading over the next 10 years or so, and what would improve their daily work/appointment lives. Learning about the process of their work was just as rewarding for me as seeing the space come together as a final product.
This was a very rewarding project to be in charge of. It was my first role as Project Manager and was extremely rewarding. The educational benefits were immeasurable and I cannot wait to take on my next project.
