This home on three city lots in the Buena Park district in Uptown, designed in 1978 by noted Chicago architect Marcel Freides, had not been updated since construction. The new owner wanted a renovation that reinterpreted the floor plan to open the space and maximize natural light while retaining elements from the original design. Interior program requirements included new kitchen and great room, new bathrooms, master suite, study, and home theater. Exterior elements included new landscaping with gardens, stone terrace and pathways, infinity edge pool, built-in hot tub, waterwall, sunken fire pit, and outdoor kitchen.

The home was originally designed around an enclosed two story atrium with glass ceiling; the new design reworks the space so the kitchen, great room, and living room open into the atrium. The main staircase has been relocated to the atrium to provide a sculptural focus in the center of the home. The wood and steel staircase connects to the second floor via a glass bridge to maximize light entry into the space below.

A custom kitchen is designed with Poliform cabinets constructed of Spessart oak and full-height black glass panels. The kitchen and great room open to a landscaped terrace through a 25ft retractable glass wall system which integrates the interior and exterior spaces. A linear fireplace with blackened steel surround is recessed along the width of the great room to define the space which is located between two large volumes.

Sustainable design elements include a green roof, high efficiency mechanical systems, recycled insulation, highly insulated building envelope, and high efficiency windows with low-E glass.
