Mountain House

The mountain house is a house and art studio, originally conceived as a safe haven from fire in a green canyon outside of Los Angeles. Composed of a simple rectangular volume with walls of glazing angled to maximize views and fit within the zoning envelope, the roofline echoes the mountain ridges on either side of the canyon. As part of the client’s interest in sustainable building systems, an analysis of cost and environmental impact of the various systems was completed.

Tragedy struck the neighborhood August 29, 2009, and the existing house burned to the ground along with 75% of the neighborhood while the new house was still in the design phase. The plan has been re-worked to maximize shaded southern exposure in the studio, and the materials have evolved to include cast-concrete and steel as the primary structure to prevent future catastrophe.
