Extension to the Eco Museum

The National University (UNAM) organized an invitation-only competition for the extension of its Eco Museum built in the 1950′s by Mathias Goeritz to become an Experimental Art Space. We organized the new program in simple boxes: Administration, Workshops, Auditorium, and a multipurpose container in the central area. For Goeritz, the sequence to discover the museum was full of symbolisms related to contention, void, openness, and connection. The extended project consists of an opposing symbol: void vs. contention; a directed openness to the sky vs. a connection to the underground; suspended materiality vs. the weight of inevitable gravity. A game of symbolic contraries that creates attraction and tension.
