Urban Design

For this project, I redesigned the West Side Flats, an area directly across the Mississippi River from downtown Saint Paul, Minnesota. The majority of this area consisted of light industry and empty lots. Our overall goal for the design was to create a transit-orientated community which will include a light rail transit hub, mixed use development, a park system and a pedestrian-orientated streetscape.

My objective was to develop a transit-orientated community by basing the design around a light rail transit hub. This would offer lower-income residents affordable housing, easy transportation and a pleasing living and work environment. Increasing the use of public transportation will also decrease the amount of carbon emissions and impervious systems as well as encourage people to walk. In turn, an increase in pedestrian traffic will help local businesses and foster a stronger community.
