Before the pandemic, our client made the forward-thinking decision to build a micro home. With the onset of the pandemic, this versatile space was transformed into a private schoolhouse, featuring two classrooms and a bathroom.
This decision proved invaluable. Amid school closures and the need for social distancing, the family was able to provide uninterrupted education for their children.
Located as a freestanding structure adjacent to the client’s primary residence, the schoolhouse was thoughtfully designed with flexibility in mind. It serves dual purposes: as a micro home for hosting guests or as an adaptable learning space for the client’s growing children.
As architects, we have the opportunity—and the responsibility—to design buildings that are flexible and capable of adaptive reuse. By creating spaces that can evolve with changing needs, we contribute to a more sustainable and enduring built environment.
