IUBAT Hospital

As part of an overall master plan for the IUBAT campus in Dhaka, Wiegerinck has designed (in collaboration with Frans Kolkman architect) a 15 storey high-rise to accommodate a university hospital alongside the banks of the river Turag.

The building has an almost square base where outpatient clinics and the day care center are organized around the entrance hall. Situated halfway through the building are radiology, nuclear medicine and the operation ward which has a direct access from the emergency room at the ground floor. Also located in this middle section of the building are facilities for staff and employees which open onto a roof terrace. Situated in the top section of the building are the special care unit, the delivery and maternity wards and wards for general care.

Bangladesh has a very rich tradition of brick masonry, and since architecture is the attachment of a building to a specific site, its architecture should stay within that site’s tradition. The design aims to limit solar radiation by shading the façades with a deep grid. The three-storey main entrance hall has a different look, which is open and representative.
