Experimention Machine - Thesis Project

The thesis project is developed in the area of Ponte Lambro, in the south-eastern suburbs of Milan near the highway where the skeleton of an imposing building lies nowadays abandoned, it’s a structure built for the World Cup Italy 90 but never completed and now deteriorated.

The project aims to regenerate this building and its nearby area, turning it into a building that hosts a new urban function, a theatre, that is able to become a centre of attraction for the city.
Transformation, movement, modularity and sustainability are the key concepts that underlie the thesis project. It consists of a wide and flexible central theatre, with a modular system of mechanical lifts, and two wings equipped for theatrical production functions (laboratories, practice rooms, ext) and for didactic training on theatre culture (classrooms, library, ext).

The metamorphosis of the skeleton is meant to be a warning for our generation and for the future ones. A provocation, an invitation to reflect on the theme of construction and reuse of all organisms built for major events and generally underutilized after those events.

The development of the project is dictated by a specific construction rule. A particular attention is paid to technological details and to environmental control techniques, preferring the use of natural materials and technologies with prefabricated construction and assembly. Inside the metal grid are placed new volumes according to the design principle of structure and coating. They are totally flexible and they are assembled adjusting their standardized measures to the structural module of the building. This allows a spatial planning flexible and changeable through time.
