Avondale Node

This proposal consists of a community and recreation center that acts as an anchor for the ongoing revitalization of the Avondale neighborhood in Birmingham, AL. Placed at the intersection of a major local street, these structures act as an advertisement for the area. Formally, the design manifests the idea of a community by separating program into individual boxes that are united by a singular wrapping roof, while its industrial style recalls the city’s manufacturing past. Existing homes on the surrounding blocks are preserved, complemented by new homes and apartments that in-fill the site’s many vacant lots.
