Three strangers in balance - Hybrid public complex in Ivry-sur-Sein (Paris, France)

The challenge of the project was to fulfill its program: to combine sports, music and administration functions in a single building. These three different functions have specific spatial dimensions and characteristics that constrain the project’s design: the auditorium (music),  the dojo and climbing wall (sports) and the offices (administration).  The objective of the project was to optimize each function individually and preserve its formal identity. In order to achieve this, the three functions are grouped in three different volumes that follow the form of their function. Once together, instead of merging into one undifferentiated volume or “wrapping” them with a unifying skin, they rest on each other in balance, maintaining their singular form. To make this more evident, the texture of each volume is different, although the material used, (aluminum) is the same. The main interstitial space between the volumes becomes the distribution hall, a triple-height void that relates the three functions. The main access to the hall takes places through a pedestrian axis in the south side of the site.
