Frontages

In Houston’s Fifth Ward, streets organize life. The lack of obstructions sitting in road verges and frequent absence of sidewalks mean that many streets in the area are sidewalks themselves. Social mixing happens in the street.

FRONTAGES, a strategy for a set of two accessory dwelling units and two primary units adaptable to a number of sites, exploits this street condition in the exploration of connection and separation between units.

Formal and social hierarchies between primary and accessory dwellings and dwellers are broken down through a coordinated series of conceptual folds, providing shared and private amenities, and opportunities for highly variable social engagement.
