Shinique Smith

Artist Shinique Smith is known for mix media sculpture that incorporate into an interior space (wall, floor, ceiling and sometimes door or window). Her beautiful calligraphy combines with lots of found objects. Each object with different colors, texture and stories behind it creates complexity and personality to her pieces. She pays much attention on how the objects appear in a space and how the viewers experience it.

The loft is designed with fluidic movement imitated by her free calligraphic stroke. Overlapping space creates openness. Varied height of steps, seating, counter height, bed defines zones in space. Loft is well lit with existing rows of windows. Although there is no actual door, the threshold is created by the giant curvy shelve following the fluidic movement and the curve wall by the desk separates the artist’s living/work zones with her public gallery. One is invited to take a glimpse of her personal working space from the gallery standing point; however, the living zone is totally blocked from the public view.

Interior remains neutral white as the artist deals with much of colors. Neutral white allows her eyes to relax from it and at the same time does not interfere with her works.
