Montauk Beach House

The Montauk beach house is designed for a woman in her 40s, is a freelance writer. She loves her beach house to be a place for her to live sustainably, to write, to be inspired and to get old.

Common area like living room, kitchen and dining are open and closet to her private space including a master suite that links to a walking closet, which also can be accessed from the other side of the room. Linked to the bed is the library with plenty of shelving for her book collections, and a desk for her to write and be inspired. Notice how each space connects to each other allowing multi-access from different location.

The big split-circle hallway by entrance was formed for viewing and air circulation. The form purposely getting narrower toward the end helps lead the eye or create ‘focus’ to the beach view. If you fold a piece of paper into a roll and place it to your eyes and look through it, you barely see the space inside the tube. If you narrow one end of the tube and look through from the wider end, what you see is more focus/clear and now you aware of the soft interior space that the ‘cone’ created. Moreover, by splitting the circle at top, it allows sunlight to enter the hallway. As the hallway form is rounded, light will softly bounce off the space creating an amazing glow.

There are details designed for aging in place purpose that are not shown in the presentation. For instance, sliding doors are used for easy access and creating extra space allowing someone in a wheelchair to navigate around easily. Height of kitchen and bathroom counters is designed with intention to allow knee space. Also space are well lit during the day with sunlight for energy saving.
