Architect's Office

The site is an abandoned piece of land located in Charlotte, NC, which is surrounded by low-rise office buildings and shops. The form of this 2-story building for an architect’s office is determined by its functional program. The Z-shaped, enclosed site raises issues such as lack of day lighting and ventilation. Two central courtyards are my solution to address the problem, bringing nature to the site, giving employees a place to relax and breathe, and at the same time separating the public and private spaces. Office space for open work, meeting, and social areas are architecturally connected. One end is more open and social, while the other end is more private.

The frontal, existent façade is kept and a new structural wall is attached from behind. Gallery and library are at the front part of the site for public access. Studio, conference room, cafeteria and shop are around the middle courtyard. The principle’s apartment, which is connected to his/her office with an 8 feet by 10 feet “floating” hallway, is at the second floor of the back part.
