Coffee Shop

To design a coffee shop located in the Reynolds Tobacco Factory on the Powanhaw Canal. The coffee shop would be accessable from the building lobby for corporate tenants as well as from the canal walk for locals. Allowing for individuals to work and small groups to gather.

The site inspired the concept of canal and locks system. The locks of a canal denote the chamber where a change in elevation occurs. This idea of a transition in elevation, is illustrated in my design through a transition in materiality. The “chamber” where change occurs, is symbolized by the ritual of ordering a coffee. The “canal” is the seating area, one open and the other private. The counter also changes elevations to provide ques to the user at what point they order, where the...
