Founded on the belief that equitable living conditions and social welfare are not merely by-products of market forces, governmental regulations, or social policy, but are integrally formed and affected by the discrete and particular constituents of a society, this project seeks to alleviate the pressures of density and negative perception of informal living settlements through a series of operations that celebrate it as an active social network capable of self-regeneration. It will target the revitalization of an existing slum in Mumbai’s Back Bay, and serve as a pilot project for strategic dissemination throughout the city. A principle committee of local authorities, designers and planners, and non-profit organizations will oversee a multi-phase in situ slum upgrading in collaboration with local community groups.
