The University of Michigan's Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning presents...Infra-tecture, a lecture by Jeanne Gang, FAIA, LEED AP.
MacArthur Fellow Jeanne Gang is Founder and Principal of Studio Gang Architects, an award-winning architecture and urban design practice based in Chicago and New York. Internationally recognized for her innovative use of materials and environmentally sensitive approach, Gang explores the role of design in revitalizing cities. Through projects ranging in scale from community anchors and cultural institutions to tall mixed-use buildings and urban plans, she engages pressing contemporary issues and their impact on human experience. Employing this approach, Gang has produced some of today’s most compelling architecture, including the Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership, the WMS Boathouse at Clark Park, the Nature Boardwalk at Lincoln Park Zoo, and Aqua Tower.
Gang is currently engaged in major projects throughout the United States, including the Fire Rescue 2 training facility in Brooklyn, New York; the Campus North Residence Hall at the University of Chicago; and towers in San Francisco, Miami, and New York. Recently, Studio Gang was selected to design the expansion of the American Museum of Natural History. Her work has been honored and exhibited widely, including at the International Venice Biennale, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago. A distinguished graduate of the Harvard GSD, she has taught at Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Rice, and IIT, where her studios have focused on cities, ecologies, and materials. Reveal, her first volume on Studio Gang’s work and process, was published in 2011, followed by Reverse Effect: Renewing Chicago’s Waterways, which envisions a radically greener future for the Chicago River.
Gang’s lecture will serve as the kick off for the 2nd Annual Urban Development Now Symposium, which will focus on the changing economic and development landscape of cities, and the distinct role of the capital markets in realizing large-scale urban projects.
