Congress Street Bridge Historic Rehabilitation (Boston, MA)

The Congress Street Bridge was built in 1930 and is historically significant because it’s the largest and most highly ornamented of the three Strauss overhead counterweight bascule bridges in the Massachusetts Highway Department bridge inventory. Due to its age and corrosion of its steel members, it could no longer meet the demands of modern traffic. The City of Boston selected STV as prime consultant to lead the historic renovation of the structure. The firm was responsible for all aspects of the design including bridge/structural design, highway design, electrical design and utility design. The bridge was converted into a fixed bridge through the removal of its counterweight since a movable bridge was no longer required. It also received structural repairs and upgrades. STV coordinated with the contractor and the Massachusetts Highway Department’s resident engineer throughout the project.
