sMB is an international design intensive studio based in New York and Kuwait. The studio aims to approach each individual project as a new question, redefining convention to seek the best possible solution. Through the design process, sMB translates the core of each design problem into the realization of architecture, interiors, product design, as well as speculative research proposals. 

sMB’s objective is to cultivate a multifaceted platform for explorations of innovation and design. While developing projects across the globe, sMB is motivated by the opportunity to learn from opposing cultures and sites through the dialogue of design and architecture. While the studio’s leadership is based on a productive collision between Eastern and Western values, the team looks to build on this core to redefine each project’s fundamental design criteria. sMB believes in identifying and extracting the essence of site - including climate, cultural sensibilities, local program conditions, methods of construction, and native materials. These contextual components set the framework for design in contemporary practice. In some instances these features are celebrated and embraced, and in others, sMB challenges their necessity and imposes a stark contrast. 

In addition to stimulating a hybrid cultural dialogue, the team has great interest in testing and obtaining inspiration from varied disciplines. sMB constantly questions how the same design problem could be approached through different scales of construction, material type, fashion, furniture, or product design. As the team tackles progressive design problems at any scale, program, or medium; the studio seeks to spark an inquisitiveness in the user or inhabitant, yet still provide a sensibility of comfort.

Through pushing aesthetic boundaries, testing innovative programmatic and material solutions, and constantly questioning the precedent, sMB always instigates an unexpected and celebrated design solution.
