......we had a very good consultation with Alexander Schwarz from David Chipperfield Architects two days ago. He helped us a lot - now we can continue.
...Time is running - it’s already the last day of November. We had our first colloquium with Prof. Schmitz on our thesis design project. It went quite well. I think, he was impressed by our comprehensive analysis of the sites and the programme. Well, he said he learned quite a lot today ^^ The design concepts are very artifactual at the moment, but that’s okay. We all found our ways into the project. For me a modest reaction to the neighbours is the most important intervention. Above a very rudimentary perspective of the volume of the building and the relation to the Faculty of Procurators, across the street. It will never look like this in the end, but it’s an important start…
...we spent way too long on the 500 models, but we're done now. so I can start with the actual work on the design. from next Monday on 14 weeks of thesis duration. uhhhhhh.
...Just returned from the field trip to Glasgow - this diverse, dense and complex Scotish city. This excursion was a great opening for my master thesis, which I am about to start. Beside all the great things I have seen, I visited all the possible sites for the Design Project - a Literature Institute. Do not know yet, which site I will choose - they all are just to different: some right in the crowded city centre, some in more quiet housing areas, some next to the river, etc. It depends on how I interpret the brief. But I am ready to start this journey...
...…today was mid term crit of the design project. Task is to design a Primary School in St. Gallen. We started with the simple idea of a long rectangular volume, contrapointing the natural heavy shaped surrounding landscape, as well as giving a certain expression to the city by its pure physical presence. But during the design process the volume turned into a shell including the concept of a compact pavilion school. The school part is defined by three inner courtyards, connected by a system of stairs, ramps and corridors, providing different qualities for the pupils to stay there. Also the idea of accessing the roof of the teaching clusters is very important. All enclosed by the shell. The main point of critique was the justification and function of the shell. And if the idea of a totally open to top school building is the plausible. Let’s see what we will find as answers… Four more weeks until the final presntation.
