The new Bengbu Opera House and Music Hall complex sits along a newly developed coastline and public park integrating existing and natural landscape in the city of Bengbu, China.
Designed to be an instant cultural icon for the new city, a 1200 seat opera house and 600 seat recital hall are embedded into the building like pearls in a clam. The opera house, or black pearl, is completely sealed acoustically and is light-tight. The recital hall on the other hand, or white pearl, allows natural light to permeate and views to the adjacent river. The landscape strategy offers a full public park to the city while protecting the building from from the distraction of the city.
