Holley Farmer, principle dancer at the Merce Cunningham Dance Company in New York comes to SCI-Arc to discuss the intersection of movement, space, and technology.
Her work with Cunningham spans a decade in which this master of modern dance explored the potential of motion capture, simulation, and algorithmic computation as a medium for moving in space.
With an eye toward the SCI-Arc Robot House, Farmer will discuss her master's choreographic techniques, chance operations, and collaborations with technology.
Over his 70 year career, Cunningham's ground breaking work and collaborations with John Cage have been an important touchstone for modern art and dance. SCI-Arc's Robot House has opened up a new arena for architects to explore the possibilities of collaboration and interaction. Cunningham's work offers a clear path for us to follow into new frontiers.
Immediately following the lecture will be a robotic movement demonstration in the lab.
