Design/Build for Public Interest

Sun, Aug 3 '14  –  Fri, Aug 15 '14
Waitsfield, VT, US

The field of public interest design has gained substantial recognition in recent years as a growing number of practitioners strive to provide community service through architecture.  In this course, led by a dynamic team of Jersey Devil co-founders Steve Badanes and Jim Adamson, along with New York-based architect Bill Bialosky, participants will engage in a hands-on process of designing and then building a full-scale public project. Past projects have included public playground structures, village green bandshells, park pavilions, compost privies, foot bridges, trail shelters, writers' retreats, and bus stops. In this process-driven studio experience, students will meet with the client, establish the program, work within a budget, propose and develop the design, schedule the work, and construct the project. Each phase is explored as a means of making the architecture more expressive, and sustainable building practices are emphasized throughout the process. Students will utilize a consensus-driven design/build approach as they explore how architecture can be put in service of the public interest by growing the capacity of a local non-profit or community organization. Evening lectures will focus on examples of individual and team processes as illustrated by Jersey Devil projects.

This course is open to architects and builders seeking to earn continuing ed credit or re-energize their creative juices, as well as to students, non-professionals, and anyone with enthusiasm about design/build and giving back to the public realm.

Reviews:

"I think [this] class is one of the most valuable classes I have taken during my architectural education process.  All the books and class lectures I have read and attended do not come close to the knowledge one can obtain from actually building a structure."
