Pamela Burton
Principal, Pamela Burton and Company, Santa Monica
Distinguished Alumni Lecture

Pamela Burton received her Bachelor of Arts degree and Master of Architecture degree from the University of California, Los Angeles.  Burton combines an extensive knowledge of plant materials and the history of landscape with an interest in architectural spaces that have symbolic resonance.   She founded Pamela Burton & Company shortly after graduation, motivated to integrate the disciplines of art, architecture, and landscape.  The Santa Monica based corporation offers comprehensive landscape design for civic, institutional, commercial, and residential clients. Burton’s projects include private residences and public spaces in California, New York, Brazil, Bahamas, Japan, China, and Taiwan.

In spring, 2003 Pamela Burton completed a book titled Private Landscapes: Modernist Gardens in Southern California that profiles the suburban gardens designed by mid-century modernists Richard Neutra, Rudolph Schindler, and a number of their colleagues.  The book was published by Princeton Architectural Press and is currently in its fourth printing.  In 2010, Princeton published Pamela Burton Landscapes, which focuses on the interrelationships and crossovers between twenty of her private and public projects.  Burton continues to be inspired by the affinities between the tradition of California modernists Neutra and Schindler, with their focus on the integration of landscape and architecture, and of gardens as both refuge and journey.
