Charismatic Property: The nexus between architecture and real estate

Catherine Ingraham has lectured and published widely in architecture and architectural history and theory. Her current book, Architecture, Property and the Pursuit of Happiness (forthcoming 2017), examines architecture in relation to property systems, primarily in the United States.  Ingraham earned her Ph.D. at Johns Hopkins University.  She was an editor, with Michael Hays and Alicia Kennedy, of the critical journal Assemblage and is a Professor of Architecture in the Graduate Architecture program at Pratt Institute in New York City, a program she chaired from 1999-2005.  Dr. Ingraham is also a visiting professor at the Graduate School of Design, Harvard University. Her publications include Architecture, Animal, Human (Routledge Press, 2006), Architecture and The Burdens of Linearity (Yale University Press, 1998), as well as numerous articles and invited essays.

This lecture is part of a forthcoming book: Architecture, Property and the Pursuit of Happiness, which studies the common ground—the building site—shared by architecture and real property systems (buildings and land).  This ground is better described as a nexus because it requires the adjudication of different interests. On one side is architecture’s appropriation of a building site and on the other is the passage, through property systems, of political, legal-juridical, and economic influences. The relationships I am looking at are, thus,  "legalish"—a mix of legal and appropriative interests that emanate from property systems, the aesthetic “gift economy” that is architectural design, and the material elaboration of land and structures.
