Lecture Summary

This talk explores the meaning of landscape and culture through painting. Landscape painting has been much more than a literal capture of a place. Painting embodies both cultural and personal memories important to understanding the meaning and spirit of a landscape to its people; including, historical, socio-economical, political and even religious views.  Architects have traditionally used drawing and painting to increase their own understanding of culture and place, and architects today can create a more informed, sustainable, meaningful and lasting architecture by better knowing a place through their own drawing and painting.
