George Valdes (22) M.Arch 1 First year at Columbia University GSAPP
Brief background/experiences
I graduated in Dec of 09' with a degree in Landscape Architecture from Florida International University. At the end of my junior year I received the Florida ASLA Honor Award for a project called Mimetic Morphologies in Roberto Rovira's Design 6 studio. I began a series of part-time jobs, the more stable of which was at Arquitectonica Geo. During that time, I also collaborated with MONAD Architects (most notably on their PS1 short-listed entry) and PIEStudio. The latter involved an awesome two months of late-night trash-rummaging in order to create a series of design objects for an exhibition on PIEStudio's furniture and the nature of repurposing in general at BridgeGallery in the LES. During my senior year I began to take up voluntary TA positions in various electives and studio courses. With an initial list of about 6 schools I wanted to apply to: Harvard, UPenn, SCI-ARC*, Pratt*, Columbia*, Princeton and AA, I only managed to apply to three*. I got into all three but after Columbia's orientation I was pretty much done.
Why you chose your school/program
I chose Columbia because I felt that the programs strengths were entirely in line with my own interests. Having followed their studios by means of class blogs and the school's website since Design 1, GSAPP was it for me. The orientation and explanation of the many Labs really solidified my decision. Columbia, in my humble opinion, will serve me best in helping me discover new platforms and new modalities in which to pratice architecture. But we will see how that goes.
Architecture interests
Whoo. Where to begin? The process? The theory? I guess since I have a very very generalist appetite it would be difficult to explain, but basically my interests encompass anything and everything that is connected to our contemporary existence be it in politics to entertainment, the whole gamut. All these things, to me, are a part of Architecture.
