Columbia Boathouse

An important aspect of the building was to incorporate the site through the building. While having the geometric properties reflect the site is one thing, having nature penetrate through the building at certain positions separates the different uses of the building through the levels of privacy and also building occupants. Within the whole building, there are occasions to have a floating program by having the top floors seem heavier than the bottom. That is because the bottom floor is only used for boat storage that is covered with polycarbonate for show of the boats and clear views. On the top floor, there is a wrapping cladding layer that surrounds the whole top floor like a box. The openings or cuts are based on certain courtyards availability or framed views that controls the program orientation. The play of open and closed within the box creates a push and pull within the geometric properties of the box and emphasized by placing green landscaping throughout the building and also through the materiality of the planes of the box.
