Terracotta, an ancient material used by sculptors, artisans, and architects, has undergone a great revival through the work of Louis Sullivan’s Guaranty Building in Buffalo (1896). The objective of this studio to reinvent terracotta in a contemporary architectural context. This studio is also in collaboration with the North East’s leading terracotta research and manufacturing company, Boston Valley Terra Cotta. After multiple training seminars testing and understanding the basic technical aspects of this material it was evident that many facets of production and manufacturing were still relying on ancient processes such as hand sculpting and plaster mold packing. These processes are time intensive and inefficient to today’s technological and manufacturing standards. In addition, the technique of slip casting with plaster molds encourages repetitive forms rather than embracing mass-customization. Therefore, it is the combination of these two factors that has launched this branch of material and manufacturing research. We believe that if the process of production can be updated with the use of modern technologies and become integral with parametric design software then complex architectural solutions can be achieved on a widespread scale.
