Ridge Street Row

Ridge Street Row is an 8-unit development that reinterprets the historic row house. Developed by the architect, the challenge was to realize a feasible project driven by sustainability and design. The site is located on a street of mostly 19th Century two-story row homes. The architect sought to design contemporary housing that both respects and differentiates from its historic context. The result, a two-story brick façade with punched windows and a glass sloped and recessed third story wall, presents a play between modern and historic. Sustainable construction methods unconventional in row house design include the use of prefabricated concrete panels and hollow core planks. Through the inclusion of terraces and large expanses of glass, rooms extend beyond their walls to invite the outdoors in. The project sets a standard for urban living by achieving ecological and aesthetic harmony between the building’s unconventional structure and its context of historic urban fabric.
