The City as an Archipelago

This image depicts Dublin City as an Archipelago. It is an ideogram and it is an image that derives from an Ungerian conception of the metropolis. Concretely, it shows sixty-four buildings or architectural ensembles that exert a presence within the urban environs of the city itself.

Each of these entities is selected not on the basis of taste or aesthetic quality but only insofar as they express, in a pure and legible form, an idea or concept. They are believed to be exemplary. Though each is autonomous, each contributes invariably to the image of the city as a whole.

In this way the city itself is thought of as an ensemble. It is at once pluralistic and unitary. It consists of ‘islands’ or ‘mini-citys’.
